The Mayor’s Cup Youth Squads turned in impressive performances in their two-match Goodwill tour of neighbouring Suriname last week, winning one and losing one game to Suriname’s senior squad.
Mayor’s Cup Coordinator Lennox Arthur was full of praise for his charges, noting that they performed excellently and that this spells well for Guyana’s footballing future.
Arthur informed that the Under-20 team faced their Surinamese counterparts and came out 2-1 winners.
After Suriname opened the scoring as early in the 7th minute, the Guyanese attacked looking for the equaliser and in the 14th minute one of the standouts of the series, 16-year-old William Europe, received a pass and worked down the wing to furnish a beautiful cross to Lorenzo Duesbury who finished with aplomb.
With the scores level at 1-1, the Mayor’s Cup side fought for the go ahead but were made to work and wait until the 89th minute when Manasseh Primo, who is playing with Surinamese club Transvaal, struck an excellent free kick which found the mark and handed the visitors victory.
Arthur disclosed that apart from the players mentioned in the goal scoring, Trevon Lythcott, goalkeeper Dorville Stewart, who pulled off some outstanding saves and Amos Ramsay were outstanding.
The second match saw the Under-23 team interspersed with several younger players facing the senior Suriname side preparing for the Digicel Cup championship. Arthur noted that they were expecting to face a U-23 team.
However, the Guyanese rose admirably to the challenge and held their own impressively against a senior national team. They eventually lost the contest 1-0 due to an own goal off Solomon Austin.
Arthur pointed that several players including Devon Millington, Sherman David, Shemroy Arthur, Stewart and Europe did well.
The coordinator reserved special praise for Coach Peter Lashley and the excellent job he did with the players after only one week of preparation prior to the series.
He also informed that the Mayor’s Cup Committee is also looking to take the junior team to Barbados hopefully in October and efforts are being made through contact with Football Administrator Sherlock Yarde. A tour to Brazil is also on the cards for early next year.
Several players with the team that travelled to London to face Cray Wanderers should be added to the squad including Mustapha Haqq, while Andrew Murray will also be available.
Arthur is calling on the Guyana Football Federation to monitor this crop of youngsters who could, with the right preparation, be ready to represent this nation for the next World Cup.
