Copper thief asks for ‘reasonable penalty’

“Meh worship I want a reasonable penalty because this is de first time I reach so far” were the words of Dillon George who pleaded guilty to simple larceny. George appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
George pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that on August 4, at Middle Road, he stole one telephone cable valued at $400,000 – property of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T).
A second charge stated that on the same day he maliciously damaged one telephone cable, belonging to GT&T.
In his defence, the man told the magistrate that he wants a “light sentence” since it was his first time.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that security officers from the telephone company were in the community when they observed the cable hanging on the road.
The prosecutor said that the officers exited their vehicle and George was seen burning the cable.
The fire was extinguished by the officers attached to the telephone company. George was arrested and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station.
The magistrate sentenced George to two years imprisonment on each charge. The charges will run concurrently.

PM shows victims died from multiple gunshot wounds

The post mortem examinations conducted yesterday on the victims of the Plaisance, East Coast Demerara shooting, has revealed that the victims succumbed as a result of multiple gunshot wounds about the body.
Troy Collymore 35, of Plaisance East Coast Demerara was shot three times to the head when three armed bandits stormed into a Plaisance drug store on Thursday last.
Also killed in the shootout was 24-year-old Sussex Street resident Anthony Taylor who, according to the police, was one of the three men who stormed the drug store.
Kaieteur News was told that warheads were extracted from each of the bodies.
One police official yesterday said that the warheads are being examined to determine if the weapons used are linked to any unsolved crimes.
Meanwhile this newspaper was reliably informed that the suspects who were arrested have since being placed on station bail.
Police officials have said that wanted man Tyrone “Cobra” Rowe is the suspected mastermind behind Thursday night’s incident at Plaisance.
The police also believe that Taylor was a member of the gang and was accidentally slain by his associates.
Noel Phillips and Lloyd Harris, who were injured, have since been discharged from the hospital.
This newspaper was reliably informed that three gunmen, including Taylor and Rowe, went to the drugstore which is owned by Chandrika Datt, to rob him.
The bandits relieved Datt of an estimated $329,000 in jewellery and eight laptop computers. They also escaped with $600,000 worth in jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash from Noel Phillips.
Shots were fired indiscriminately by the bandits as they tried to make good their escape.
A woman who was in proximity to the drug store said she heard about 15 gunshots.
Police said that they recovered several .45 spent shells at the scene.
Police had recently issued a $1M reward for 19-year-old Rowe, who is wanted for questioning in relation to murder and armed robberies.
Taylor was incarcerated for two years for wounding, and was also detained last month when police searched his home for Rowe.
