The Berbice Cricket Board as part of its junior cricketers development and public outreach campaign, on September 4 would be launching two new programmes. The BCB would launch the Narsingh Deonarine Cricket Fund. The fund would be financed by the West Indies middle order batsman as part of his contribution to the development of Berbice Cricket.
Four under-15 cricketers drawn from across the ancient county would benefit from a financial grant from the fund on a yearly basis and would also receive a collection of educational materials to assist them in their school development. Chairman of the Board’s Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster, disclosed that Deonarine readily agreed to sponsor the programme when he was approached as he was determined to play a part in the development of young cricketers for the future.
The BCB has set up a two-man selection committee consisting of veteran cricket administrators, Vemen Walter and Carl Moore, to select the four awardees for the launching in September.
As part of its charity and community outreach campaign, the BCB and the Berbice cricketers selected to tour South Africa as part of the Champion League, would at the same time launch the Guyana Senior Players Charity Programme.
Under this programme, the players and the Special Events Committee would make donations worth over $200,000 to four organizations. The four organizations selected to receive assistance are the Kamal Children Home, New Amsterdam Hospital Children Ward, New Amsterdam Special Needs School and the Mental Hospital.
The children home would receive a bale of clothing worth $100,000, the Children Ward and the Special Needs School a television set each and the Mental Hospital a microwave and coffee maker. Mr. Foster stated that this programme would be an annual one and all Berbice Cricketers representing the national team would be asked to make a contribution.
