– 85 young cricketers graduate
National Under-19 standby player, Lloydel Lewis, was named cricketer of the academy when the curtains came down on the highly successful 14th annual RHTYSC cricket academy last Friday at the Area ‘H’ ground. A total of 85 young cricketers between the ages of 6 to 18yrs graduated from the academy which lasted for two weeks under the guidance of coaches Winston Smith, Delbert Hicks and Anthony D’Andrade and was organised by the RHT Gizmos and Gadget First Division Team.

Cricket Manager of the RHTYSC, Patrick Lewis, stated that the main aim of the academy is to mould all young RHTYSC members into proper role models, teach them the responsibilities of a sports ambassador and to coach them in the basics of the game. Lewis noted that the club is the defending champion at all youth levels in Berbice and intends to continue to invest heavily in youths. He challenged the young cricketers that discipline is the key to success and to make education a key goal in their lives. Lewis also disclosed that the coaches were able to identify some new and exciting talent for the club’s under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19 teams.
President of the RHTYSC, Keith Foster, at the closing ceremony told the graduates to put into practice what they learnt from the coaches and to always be willing to listen to advice, noting that the club was investing heavily into their future. Foster who also heads the Berbice Cricket Board called on the players to remain focused, train hard and be discipline at all times.
The RHTYSC long time president stated that the club has a zero tolerance policy on indiscipline and has no intention to relax it in the future. Mr. Foster also praised the cricket academy management team of club executives Ravindranauth Kissoonlall, Moonish Singh, Sohan Harry, Patrick Lewis and Ravi Narine for successfully organising the academy in absence of club secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster who was overseas on vacation.
Mr. Omeshwar Srikishun of the Region 6 Ministry of Sports Office stated that his Ministry was delighted to assist the RHTYSC to host the academy as it was assisting youths to develop their personal skills in sports. He urged the attentive cricketers to always strive for excellence as both are important to their personal development.
Head Coach, Winston Smith, in giving a review of the academy hailed it as the best ever in six years he has associated with and noted that the RHTYSC has a rich and highly promising pool of talents for the future. He made special mention players like Loyden Lewis, Shawn Perreira, Shalendra Shameer, Arif Chan, Nazrudeen Bux and Collis Cort as stars of the future.

Shawn Perreira was named runner up player of the 2010 Cricket Academy while the other awardees were Under-13 players- Daniel Lewis, Arif Chan- Under-15, Shalendra Shameer- Under-17, Collis Cort- Under-19, Most Improved Player- Jamerson Anderson, Most Disciplined Player- Adrian Persaud, Jamine Anderson- Worker of the Academy and female player Plaffianne Millington- Most Promising Player.
The RHTYSC would like to express profound gratitude to the Ministry of Sports for it’s co-sponsorship of the academy, the Guyana Cricket Board, Guyana Beverage Company, Banks DIH Ltd., HA Snacks Company, Bakewell, Spready’s Bakery, Fredrick Rengasammy, Bermudez, Askay Singh, J’s Supermarket, Francis Sancho, The Candy Shop and the Guyana Lottery Company for their support in ensuring that the 2010 Cricket Academy was a huge success. Special mention was also be made of UWI student Anthony D’Andrade who volunteered his services to the club as part of his summer outreach programme.

66 students take part in YMCA karate grading
Master Frank Woon-A-Tai 8th Dan and Senior Technical Committee Official of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) conducted Karate Grading Examinations on Sunday August 1 at YMCA Thomas Lands.
A total of 66 students from Sensei Amir Khouri’s YMCA dojo and Sensei Clinton Moriah dojo took exams.
Isaiah Seeram, Jason Balkarran and Tiffany Andrews were promoted from white to orange belt. Christopher Belfield from yellow to green belt. Nicholas Chan from orange to 5th kyu purple belt and Shane Rahaman from 3rd kyu to 1st kyu brown belt.
After a gruelling set of Katas and strengthening exercises the following students were awarded 1st degree black belt rank:- Reyad Muhammad, Khalid Gobin, Nyvin John, Malcolm Francis and Adrian Pilgrim.
Dan diplomas were also presented by Master Frank Woon-A-Tai to students who passed earlier in May this year. The recipients are as follows:- Mark Phang, Roger Peroune, Alexander Cheeks and Esron Moriah-1st degree diploma/Patrick Cheeks-2nd Degree diploma /Nathalie Gibson and Kyle Isaacs-3rd degree diploma.
Some of the leading members of the ISKF will be competing in the upcoming 11th ISKF Pan American Karate c/ships. Samuel Ming, Leah Shariff, Kemo Cornelius, Chris Dey, Shane Wilkinson, Kristina Cheeks and Mikhail Broomes along with several new comers will try to outperform their opposition.

Anna Regina Dojo holds Grading exercises
The Anna Regina Multilateral School (ARMS) Shotokan Karate Dojo held its 4th Karate Examination on Saturday July 31 at the Anna Regina Multilateral School.
8th degree black belt Karate Master Frank Woon-A-Tai conducted the Grading Exercise.
37 students took the exams; 1 was promoted to yellow belt,7 were promoted to orange belt,15 were promoted to green belt ,10 were promoted to 5th kyu Purple Belt and Sarah Hack, Violet Bacchus, Gary Westford and Narendra Jaigopaul were promoted to 4th kyu Purple Belt.
Thanks to all parents who assisted in making this exercise a success and for the opportunity for Master Woon-A-Tai to visit Lake Mainstay. A special thanks was also expressed to the officials at Lake Mainstay.
