The first of the four phased Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Burnham Court Rehabilitation Project is currently underway with the installation of six pole-mounted Metal Halide Flood Lamps as part of a $20M Project.
The GABA ‘Parade Ground Municipal Basketball Court Enhancement Project’ has been in the pipelines for sometime as the association seeks to relieve itself from the dependency on the indoor, Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for its programmes.
An Artist Impression!!!! This is what the Burnham Basketball Court, after the completion of the $20M GABA Rehabilitation Project, should look like.
A statement from the Georgetown sub-association yesterday informed that the Project is one of the benchmark goals of the administration. It was revealed that the project was one of the planned developmental mechanisms of the association.
“The GABA, which has responsibility for the management of the Parade Ground Court, had broached the idea for upgrading the facility nearly two years ago when Trevor Rose won the Presidency of the association,” the statement indicated.
“This Project…gained momentum with Rose receiving tangible support for the idea from the Government, Municipal and Corporate communities, who felt that the idea… will have some positive influences on the neighbouring communities,” it continued.
On completion of phase one, the second part of the Project, which includes “sand-filling and landscaping the area and revetment of nearby drains” is expected to commence. Phase three will be the resurfacing of the court and installing new backboards.
The last phase of the Project is the construction of a new multi-function Pavilion. There was not the hint of any time-frame for the completion of these phases given the fact that GABA has two upcoming Pepsi-sponsored basketball programmes.

CAC boxer to face Disciplinary Committee
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Steve Ninvalle has confirmed that one boxer on the team to the just concluded Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico will face GABA’s Disciplinary Committee sometime this week.
While not naming the individual, Ninvalle, who is also the Parliamentary Secretary in the Sports Ministry, stated that Manager of the team, Maurice Rajkumar, submitted his report on Friday last and based on this document one member, seems to have been in serious breach of the rules, involving in unsavoury acts.
Since Ninvalle took over the helm of GABA, the body has instrumented a strong level of discipline among its ranks and has had to institute sanctions against at least two boxers for indiscipline.
If the individual is found to have been guilty as charged, strong action is likely by GABA.
Guyana won two bronze medals from the boxing team at the CAC through the efforts of Ray Sandiford and Dexter Jordan. The other members of the team are Herlando Allicock, Clevon Rock, Devon Boatswain and Bert Braithwaite.
Meanwhile, GABA is due to name its team for the Commonwealth Games in India from October 3-14, shortly. Ninvalle informed that it is highly likely that the team may not be more than three boxers.
