Region Four administration criticises police over “passa-passa’ events

Region Four’s administration has blasted the police over its “lack of seriousness” after a robbery last Thursday night left one man dead and three others injured.
According to Region Four Chairman, Clement Corlette, the administration has been expressing its concerns over weekly nighttime activities in a number of East Coast Demerara villages in which “immoral” activities are reportedly taking place.
Issues surrounding these activities, which he said are referred to as “passa-passa”, were raised Tuesday during a routine meeting at the Region Four offices with representatives of the police force’s “A” and “C” Divisions, Corlette disclosed yesterday.
“I insisted that before these sessions are held, there must be permission from the NDCs (Neighborhood Democratic Councils) and from the police. The NDC Chairmen are saying that they don’t ever give permission.” Corlette emphasised that it was then agreed that permission would have to be sought from the local Magistrate’s court.
“It is to my surprise that I learnt of the unfortunate shootings in the newspapers. I will have to question how serious the police are, because surely they know that these “passa-passa” events are being held. You just can’t come to the meetings and make loose arrangements.”
The official indicated that in addition to the Plaisance “line top” session on Thursdays, there would be events at the Buxton Church of God Road on Fridays and in Nabaclis on Saturdays.
Corlette said the matter was raised on Thursday again during a meeting at Victoria with residents and other officials and “I told them that the time is long past when these immoral sessions should be stopped.”
There have been accusations that the events include lewd dancing and loud music and attract rowdy crowds.
