The media can play a major role in arresting harmful cultural norms as it relates to the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS). This notion has been underscored by the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention (GHARP) Programme II.
Against this backdrop, GHARP Phase II, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s National AIDS Programme Secretariat, is seeking to engage a programme which is geared at addressing the unacceptable norm with the support of the media.
According to Prevention Director, Dr Karen Gordon-Boyle, the collaborating entities have recognised “the powerful role the media can play in tabling and challenging what are becoming harmful norms.”
With this observation in mind she related that through the collaborative effort, a proposal has been made to partner with all recognised media houses to build the capacity of relevant staff to highlight various issues using the available communication channels, be it print, television, internet and/or radio.
Dr Boyle revealed that invitations have already been extended to media houses to attend a consultation meeting to explore specific skills building needs. The meeting is scheduled for next Thursday at the GHARP, 266 Forshaw Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, and will be facilitated by NAPS’s Mr Nazim Hussain, Dr Boyle and Mr Dale Browne of GHARP II.
Based on the outcome of the consultation meeting, Dr Boyle revealed that “we will tailor upcoming media skill building workshop.”
This activity has already been planned for October 16 and 17 and will suit each respective media houses’ needs and interest.
The media workshop will be facilitated by Senior Communications Consultant, Mrs Lynda Barfield, who is a strategic communication professional with over two decades of experience in social marketing, health communication, advertising and media.
She was actively involved in GHARP I and Dr. Boyle emphasised that” we consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to continue to share expertise with our local counterparts.”
