The national Men’s Hockey team which is scheduled to depart today to contest the Pan American Championship in Venezuela paid a courtesy call on the country’s Ambassador to Guyana Dario Morandy yesterday, at its Embassy on Thomas Street, South Cummingsburg.
The team which is being managed by former national player and current Business Development Officer of Digicel Gavin Hope received pertinent information about Venezuela by the Ambassador which they listened to attentively.
The team will be led by Captain Devin Munroe and includes six other members of the squad that participated in the last Pan Am Tournament in Canada.
Those returning from the previous team are Jerazeno Bell, Azad DeAbreu, Alex Gouveia, Shane Samuels, Robert Fernandes and UK-based Marvin Dannett, who has been summoned back home for the tour.
The other members are Dwayne Scott, Rayon Bradford, Michael Xavier, Robert France, Aderemi Simon and Colonel Heywood, who will be going as the Developmental Player.
Meanwhile, Morandy speaking at the occasion spoke of his country which he referred to as one of the happiest countries in the world.
“We Venezuelans know how to mix and blend partying, sports and to enjoy ourselves,” he said.
Morandy told the players that Friday for Venezuelans is the beginning of Saturday, perhaps in reference to the traditional start of the weekend and the end of the working week.
He added that Venezuela with a population of around 20 million has some of the most beautiful women in the world and some very important cities.
The tournament is being held in Barquisimeto which is situated approximately three hours outside the capital Caracas by road, but a mere 45 minutes by air.
It is not known to produce petroleum, but rather for its agricultural products.
The team’s Assistant Manager is Kevin Fogenay, while Head Coach is Timothy McIntosh with Rene Edwards as his assistant.
They play a warm-up match against Trinidad and Tobago national team today, depart the island on Friday and return to Guyana on August 16.
