Manager of Fitness Express Jamie Mc Donald (centre) hands over sponsorship cheque to National junior 110kg Champion Kenneth Melville in the presence of Caribbean Men’s Masters 75kg Champion Winston Stoby.
Guyana’s Powerlifters to the 8th IPF/NAPF North American Regional and 1st Central American and Caribbean Games Power Lifting Championships being held in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico will begin their quest for top honors today.
Caribbean Men’s Masters 75kg Champion Winston Stoby will be competing in the Men’s Open as well as the Masters categories today.
Recently crowned Caribbean 82.kg Champion/Best Lifter and Reigning Regional Champion Randolph Morgan is slated to go into action tomorrow. Morgan is featured to be shown live on the internet going head to head with former world champion Wade Hooper of the USA.
Morgan is one of ten lifters selected (male and female) out of a total of 170 athletes chosen for live viewing. Viewing can be accessed at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/north-american-powerlifting-championships.
National junior 110kg Champion Kenneth Melville and Caribbean 110kg silver medalist Richard Seymour both of Essequibo are the other two lifters participating and will be making their debuts.
According to a Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) release, Guyana was unable to field a strong team comprising a blend of junior and senior lifters due to the non-granting of visas to three of the country’s best juniors from Berbice.
Included in the list was potential world record hopeful Vijai Rahim (56kg weight class) who was slated to attempt cracking the existing world sub-junior record for the dead lift which he has been achieving comfortably in training.
He has already broken the Regional record at the recently held National Junior Powerlifting Championships here but could not have had it officially ratified due to the absence of three internationally certified judges.
GAPF President Peter Green stated that his Federation will be leaving no stone unturned in making it possible for Rahim to break the world record before he becomes over age in January 2011.
Meanwhile, the senior National Championships are billed for late October/November pending approval by the IPF/NAPF to have Rahim attempt the record at home with the presence of three international judges and financial assistance from the private and corporate sector with airfare and accommodation for the visiting officials.
