They went, they saw and they conquered. With the inaugural Caribbean 20/20 title in the bag Ramnaresh Sarwan’s men are now focused on preparing to represent the Caribbean in the Champions League tournament in South Africa from September 10-26 and the 15-man squad is expected to be named later this month.
A 20-man squad will go into training from Monday and Chairman of the National senior selection panel Claude Raphael will have little time to bask in the glory of selecting a winning team and says that the Captain and Coach Ravendra Seeram will have a big say in the composition of the squad to South Africa.
In addition to the 14 players who traveled to Barbados and Trinidad for the Caribbean 20/20 tournament, the six other players who were named as standbys when the touring party was picked will also be eligible for the South Africa trip.
Vice-President of the Guyana Cricket Board Anand Sanasie had confirmed that a 20-man squad will be engaged in training before the final 15-man squad is named and Raphael confirmed this yesterday.
“As far as I know the 20-man squad we picked before the competition began and which trained together at the indoor facility at LBI and participated in the practice matches is the squad we have to select the team from. We hope to have a few sessions and practice games before we sit with the Captain and Coach and come up with the final 15,” Raphael said.
This is Guyana’s biggest chance to showcase their talent on the world stage and it is expected that plenty of practice matches are organized, including a proposed game against dethroned regional 20/20 champions T&T will be played at the Stadium later this month.
It is understood that while one player could be added to the 14-man squad which won the regional tournament as much as five changes could be made although that is unlikely.
Raphael said team spirit and the right balance are important factors in 20/20 cricket and disclosed that all of these things will be taken into account when the team is picked.
The selector explained that top West Indies Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul who opted to play for his English county instead of Guyana in the regional 20/20 tournament, along with left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and batsman Rajendra Chandrika who would have been contenders for the national 20/20 side had they not been unavailable due to commitments at the High Performance Centre in Barbados, will not be eligible for selection. It is understood that a 20-man squad has to be sent to the organisers of the Champions League and players could only be changed in the event of injury.
Chanderpaul’s decision not to represent his country in the regional 20/20 competition robbed Guyana of its biggest name in the tournament but like 2006 when the left-hander opted to miss the inaugural Stanford 20/20 in Antigua, Guyana won without him and the fact that his style is not best suited for 20/20 means that his absence for Guyana in South Africa will not be a crucial miss. Chanderpaul’s only appearance for Guyana in a regional 20/20 tournament was in 2008 when Guyana failed to win the competition.
The team is a very united one and carried the Golden Arrowhead proudly throughout the regional competition with Assad Fudadin, Steven Jacobs and Paul Wintz all playing massive roles in Guyana’s success despite not playing a match.
Richard Ramdeen, Anthony Bramble, Zaheer Mohamed, Krishnadat Ramoo, Leon Johnson and Sarwan’s younger brother Ravi Sarwan are the six other players in contention for selection.
It is also understood that a 20-man squad which includes the Coach, Manger Carl Moore, Raphael, Guyana Cricket Board President Chetram Singh and one other official will form the official Guyana touring party. Guyana plays Royal Bangalore Challengers in their opening match on September 12.
