City gets five garbage trucks
The Private Sector Commission (PSC) and Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) have sourced five trucks and drivers from the Guyana Scrap Metal Dealers Association to help relieve the city’s garbage woes.
According to GCCI, the association has volunteered the trucks and drivers who started garbage collection last Saturday around the city.
“As a consequence of the continued strike action by the contractors, who collect garbage in the City of Georgetown, there have been meetings with the Mayor and City Council, the Private Sector Commission (PSC), the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the Ministries of Local Government and Works,” GCCI explained in a statement.
This strike action was called as a result of the council’s inability to meet outstanding payments to the contractors. The work stoppage started on June 21 with the contractors still off the job.
“Towards this end, the Private Sector Commission and Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry have committed to making trucks available while the ministries will assist with the needed equipment to compliment the work being done by the council.
The Mayor and City Council has itself started to collect household garbage, trying to maintain the schedule.
Four held with illegal gun in Berbice
Police in Berbice yesterday detained four men, around midday, following the recovery of a .38 revolver in a house at Lancaster Village, Corentyne.
Acting on information, the police swooped down on the house in which the four men were staying and found the weapon with three matching rounds.
It is not too clear if the men or the weapon are linked to any criminal activity but police are painstakingly checking every possible lead, including carrying out ballistic tests on the recovered gun.
This is especially so since one of the men reportedly hails from West Ruimveldt in the city.
“In terms of any link to criminal activity, we don’t know as yet but it (the discovery) is highly suspicious,” Divisional Commander Steve Merai told this newspaper in an invited comment.
The men are expected to be placed before the court soon.
