President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Chetram Singh urged more than 37 aspiring cricketers to capitalize on all available opportunities while setting their sights on the ultimate goal of playing for the regional side.
Mr. Singh was at the time addressing the batch of youngsters who are participating in the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA) annual cricket academy which got underway at the Guyana National Stadium Providence, yesterday morning.
The sessions will be conducted between 09:00hrs-16:00hrs and will culminate next Tuesday morning.

President of the Association, Rohan Sarjoo welcomed the participants while disclosing that the training camp seeks to attract up to 75 youths of both genders ranging from 11-18 years from the East Bank Demerara area as well as those from Region 10, Upper Demerara. He also said that he was impressed with the high turn out while disclosing that activities would include theoretical sessions encompassing various topics as well as practical coaching. There would also be audio-visual sessions of past cricket matches.
The aspiring cricketers will also be exposed to the fundamentals of the game while several cricket experts will impart valuable knowledge on the intricacies of the sport. President of the EBDCA Rohan Sarjoo was also on hand to welcome the players and said that he was impressed with the high turn out. He urged the players to learn take advantage of the rare opportunity to inculcate as much as possible about the sport.
The programme has been structured to address the major objectives; among them, instilling the basic cricketing skills necessary for professional athletes; the finer points of the game; rules and etiquette required for the proper conduct of the game; the importance of education, nutrition, fitness and the general values of good sportsmanship.
The executive of the EBDCA would also use this and future forums to build a database of young aspiring cricketers who will comprise future teams to represent the association at the U-15, U-17, and U-19 levels.
Further, several reputable resource personnel have agreed to impart knowledge and expertise to the students. Among them are Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie, former test player Roger Harper, GCB video analyst Robin Singh, Cricket Development Officer (CDO) Reon King and former Chairman of the National Sports Council and financial consultant Conrad Plummer.
Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit and retired banker Paul Geer, National Scorer and athletic coach, Linden Wilson, Help and Shelter Counselors Margaret Kertzious, Karen Gomes and Kevin Massiah are also slated to address the participants of the camp.
Activities move to the field on Saturday when two evenly matched teams comprising the participants battling in a 40-over encounter.
This Camp has been fully sponsored by several East Bank Demerara and Georgetown businesses including AFS Shipping, Royal Woodworking, King’s Jewelry World, Steve’s Jewelry, Sherry’s Taxi and Sterling Products Limited.

Junior players to display skills as Royal Chess Academy stages championships
The country’s top junior chess players will be in action when the Royal Chess Academy stages a chess championship starting today and concluding on Sunday 8 next.
The tournament would be held at the University of Peace Studies, 135 Sheriff Street Campbellville under the theme, ‘Challenges of Youth Empowerment’ and players would contest one round per day.
Among those vying for the top prize are National Junior Champion, Cecil Cox, Raan and Ron Motilall, Su Hai Seng, Meikel Mohabir, Anthony Drayton, Shane Yussuf, Rashad Hussain and Naitanand Singh.
The organizers have advised that all games are open for viewing and members of the public are welcome to attend.
