– Sabrina Princess wins co-feature
The Message from the Colin Elcock stables produced a storming run down the homestretch to ensure that its connections came away with a significant portion of the stakes in the ‘B’ & Lower feature race on Sunday during the Port Mourant Turf Club’s Emancipation Meet, at the entity’s Headquarters in Berbice.
The Message ridden by the in-form Paul Delph and Prince Charming also from the Elcock stables tracked the leaders Laura Lee in Flight ridden by Drepaul and Silver Source during the early going of the 1800 metres event.
As the horses hit the back-straights, The Message was brought up into contention by Delph, while Laura Lee in Flight had shaken off the initial challenge offered by Silver Source with the Jamaican Andron Finley in the stirrups.
Turning for home in the most gruelling event of the day, Delph brought The Message alongside Laura Lee in Flight and after a brief duel, the Elcock entrant produced a blistering turn of speed that left all challengers in its wake en route to victory by 10 lengths.
Laura Lee in Flight held on to finish second followed by Prince Charming and Silver Source in that order.
The Message took home $500,000 for the win, while Laura Lee in Flight received $200,000, Prince Charming $100,000 and Silver Source $50,000.
In the co-feature, the three years old Derby where the top prize of $400,000 was sponsored by Banks DIH, Sabrina Princess of the Chris Jagdeo stables superbly ridden by jockey Rupert Ramnauth destroyed a class field that included Elcock’s entries Celebration Time and Peaceful with consummate ease.
Ramnauth produced a master-class performance of riding to upset the highly favoured duo along with Five Star General, Stormy Deal, Fairy Landing and Gabriel’s Gold in what many classified as a huge upset.
Peaceful picked up the running as soon as the gates opened and set a tremendous pace early, but Ramnauth using his experience to perfection kept pace with the leader, while Celebration Time ridden by Kumar Singh off the pace tucked in behind the back markers.
The two front runners opened a significant lead on the field, but Peaceful more at home over the shorter distance begun to fade as they approached the turn for home with Celebration Time who had tracked the leaders for most of the race making a charge to catch them.
On the turn for home, it appeared as though Sabrina Princess had made a mistake by going wide, while Peaceful begun to tire.
However, Ramnauth seemed confident that the horse had more running and hit the straps, opening an unassailable gap, before going on to win by a handsome margin with Celebration Time finishing fast on the rails to pip out Five Star General for second, while Peaceful held on for fourth.
In the day’s opening race, the ‘G’ & Lower sponsored by Digicel, Maracas Star with Flores aboard outclassed the field for the $220,000 top prize.
Stylish Line finished second, while Pixie Fire and Zip A Dee Doo Dah occupied the minor positions.
The two years old for Guyana and West Indian bred, sponsored by Kingsway saw Better than Gold of the Jagdeo stables romp home ahead of Sabrina’s Joy and Zodiac Princess in that order.
That race carried a first prize of $300,000.
Drepaul then steered The Gap to a commanding win in the ‘E’ & Lower event to cart off $250,000 with Sweet Revenge second, Maracas Star returning to grab third and Madame Butterfly fourth.
In the day’s final race, the ‘I’ class event sponsored by Digicel Zebra ridden by Findley of the Rumour’s racing stable as it took home the $120,000 in the 1300M race.
The Jagdeo stable with two first and two second places was declared the champion stable with trainer Tribouwhan ‘Turbo’ Jagdeo crowned the champion trainer, while Rupert Ramnauth riding out of the Jagdeo stable was declared the top jockey on show. They received trophies compliments of Nafico/Nalico and Trophy Stall Bourda Market. Over $3.6M in prizes and trophies was distributed during the day’s racing.
