Police at Lethem have seized the firearm of a popular businessman after they arrested him for physically abusing his wife.
The businessman, who was also a leading figure in the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce, was arrested on Sunday, hours after his wife reported that she was severely beaten by him.
According to reports, the woman who has since been issued with a medical certificate for her injuries told police that her husband had threaten her with his licenced firearm.
She informed police that Sunday’s incident was not the first time she had suffered physical abuse at the hands of her husband.
She reported that two Saturdays ago, he allegedly forced her into a car at gunpoint.
On Sunday, police swooped down on the businessman and arrested him and seized his firearm.
He was subsequently released on $50,000 station bail and is likely to face charges on the next scheduled court day in Lethem.
