… Trawler explosion
Relatives of missing fisherman, Ravi Ragoonauth, are preparing to travel to neighboring Suriname later today to view the remains of a man who was fished out of Suriname waters over the weekend.
One week ago, Ragoonauth went missing and another crew member, Rameshdat Misir Narine called ‘Barrat’, died after the trawler they were working on, MV Captain Tom, burst into flames. The captain of the vessel, Ramlall Ramjattan and another crew member, Sharief Khan, escaped with minor injuries.
Yesterday, Ragoonauth’s father, Ram Ragoonauth told this newspaper that he received a call from the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters and was informed that the Surinamese had found the body of a male and are waiting for it to be positively identified.
The missing man’s father said that hopefully sometime later today the family will be given some form of closure if the body is identified as his son’s.
The man said he was hoping that by some miracle his son would be found alive.
Two Sundays ago, Ragoonauth was in the engine room on board the MV Captain Tom, and the other three crew members were on the deck when the vessel burst into flames. Two crew members immediately jumped overboard. However, Narine reportedly ran into the engine room to inform Ragoonauth about the fire. It is alleged that by the time Narine tried exiting the engine room, the vessel was almost engulfed in flames.
Narine, Ramjattan and Khan jumped overboard and were rescued but no one could account for Ragoonauth. Narine subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
The captain of the boat was detained to assist with investigation but was subsequently released.
