The annual Occupational Wages and Hours of Work Survey will begin today, according to the Ministry of Labour. A release from the ministry states that the survey will include questions on wages and hours of work of various occupations as well as the employment cost component.
Statistics on wages and hours of work comprise one of the main branches of labour statistics and is essential in evaluating conditions of work.
It was noted that the information garnered from the survey would provide the groundwork for career planning and counselling, facilitate efficient allocation of educational resources and educational planning, and provide data to potential investors and employers as well as to unions and workers, for effective bargaining.
The Ministry pointed out that wages of employees vary according to the level of education, skill, occupation, type of industry, size of establishment and geographical location, among other variables.
July was used as the reference month for the survey and information would be secured from wages and salary sheets of establishment for the reference period.
The conduct of the survey is guided by authority from two main sources – the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 160 and Recommendation 170 and Chapter 98:01 of the Laws of Guyana.Guyana is a member of the ILO and has strongly supported the progressive policies of that entity.
ILO Convention 160 deals with labour statistics and the importance of countries ensuring that these types of statistics are regularly compiled.
The Laws of Guyana also require businesses to submit information on labour statistics to the Ministry.
The Ministry also emphasised that confidentiality stipulations will be strictly adhered to, ensuring that the report will not identify the individual businesses, but highlight various trends in industries.
Gratitude was extended to both public and private organisations for their continued cooperation while the importance of their contributions to the success of this year’s survey was stressed. The response rate for this survey is expected to be very high, allowing for greater accuracy. This is the Ministry’s sixth survey to date.
