Other disciplines suffer mixed fortunes
Guyanese boxers’ hopes of winning a silver or gold medal at the 21st Central American and Caribbean championships, currently underway in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, fizzed out after Dexter Jordan and Ray Sandiford lost their quarterfinal matches to Puerto Rican Jonathon Gonzales and Guatemalan Juan Reyes, Wednesday evening last.
Earlier in the tournament, Jordan had defeated Panamanian Edgar Valencia while Sandiford had stamped his authority with a vicious first round knockout over Valencia’s countryman Barnie Arguelles.
According to Chef-de-Mission, Deion Nurse, Gonzales entered the ring as the favourite by dint of his status as a world champion. Nurse further related that Jordon entered the ring as the underdog against the Puerto Rican but turned in a masterful performance. However, at the end of the bruising encounter the Guyanese boxer lost by an 8-3 margin. According to Nurse, Sandiford’s bout against Guatemalan Juan Reyes was another classic but the latter boxer used all his experience to claim a 16-2 verdict.
Earlier in the day, cyclist Claire Fraser did not fare well in the women’s road race. Thirty nine cyclists faced the starters orders with Fraser finishing 31st in a time of 2.34.29.
Venezuelan, Angie Gonzales was the first across the finish line in 2.09.24 followed by her country mate, Marie Rosado in 2.09.25 and Tiana Garcia of Colombia with a time of 2.09.25.
The male cyclists, Alonzo Greaves and Geron Williams fared no better in the 145km event. The duo competed in hot conditions and against some of the best cyclists in the region and out of a field of 81 competitors finished 10th and 25th respectively.
In Taekwondo, local artist Farad Bacchus was no match for Arubian Leonard Janga, and ended up losing by a 17-2 margin. David Rajab also lost 2-0 to Dominican, Jose Silverio to close off a bad day for the competitors of this sport.
The other two competitors in this discipline, Sven Lorrimar and Adrian Spellen, were scheduled to be in action late yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, table tennis players are contesting the round of thirty two with high hopes of qualifying for the round of sixteen.
Sprint queen, Marian Burnett was also scheduled to compete in the women’s 800m finals sometime last evening.
