In a strategic move to ensure that the upcoming International Basketball Series lives up to all the necessary hype, the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) will partner with one of the leading entertainment companies, Wildfire Entertainment.
President of the GABF, David Patterson made the revelation yesterday at a media briefing which was held to bring journalists ‘up-to-speed’ with the developments related to the series. The topics discussed also dealt with the status of the participating teams.
“We have selected Wildfire Entertainment to assist in the management of this event.
There is an official promotional launch scheduled for next week,” Patterson said before disclosing the teams that are confirmed to participate and the local coaching staff.
Wildfire’s Vijay Panday and Warren Williams were both present at the occasion but preferred to disclose the company’s plan for the mega event at next week’s launch. Four male teams, which include Guyana, and three female teams are confirmed.
The male teams that are confirmed are Guyana, Washington D.C Jammers, New York All-Stars and South Carolina All-Stars and the female teams are Guyana, South Carolina All-Stars and the Washington D.C Women that also have some Canadian players.
Antigua and Barbuda are also down to compete in the male tournament, but Patterson stated that flight difficulties with LIAT are proving a big bear for them. He said if Antigua comes there will be three games every night for seven nights at the Sports Hall.
“There will be a possible game outside of Georgetown. We are thinking about New Amsterdam because the overseas teams have requested that,” Patterson said, adding that the GABF made an important decision to capitalise on every development opportunity.
Vice-President in charge of Operations at the GABF, Floyd Levi said that there were scheduling problems at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall that affected the smooth flow of preparation for both the national teams, which the National Sports Commission have sorted out.
“We want to thank Mr. Kumar for his personal intervention. The GABF will be working hard to ensure that we pick the best teams because we understand that the teams that will be coming are very competitive and we want to raise our standard,” Levi said.
Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan was appointed Coach of the national senior male team with Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid as his Assistant Coach. Mark Agard was named to be the national senior women’s Coach with Brian Carter as his Assistant Coach.

BCB congratulates Jonathan Foo on senior national debut
The Berbice Cricket Board has extended congratulations to Jonathan Foo for making his senior national debut in the current regional Twenty20 tournament.
Anil Beharry, a member of the Board’s Public Relations Committee extended congratulations to Foo and the selectors for recognizing his talent at a very young age having represented Berbice and Guyana at all youth levels. “The board would like to encourage Foo to continue his commitment and dedication along with discipline to the game as his natural talent is well known. We are proud to produce another national player, a true reflection of the hard work by both players and administration in Berbice. All cricketers should use Foo’s elevation to national senior cricket as a motivator and may it inspire them to continue playing cricket with the necessary love for the game.
Even though there are some question marks on the non-selection of Berbice players in the national Twenty20 team, taking into consideration the performance of players during the recent DJ Stress Twenty20 Festival and Digicel Summer tournament, the board wishes the Guyana team well in their bid to represent the West Indies in South Africa.
Once more congratulations to all the Berbice players that has made the national team, Jonathan Foo in particular.”

“This is not our first involvement in horse racing and certainly not our last, we’ve added our support to almost all the events held so far for the year and we intend to continue that trend,” Hope assured.
Digicel have sponsored the ‘I’ Class event and it represents prize monies and trophies for the winners.
Meanwhile, PMTC Secretary Chattergoon Ramnauth thanked the entity for its continued support towards the industry and promised a high class event with the full complement of starters for the race. “We are now in receipt of a new photo finish camera which will now be able to separate the horses in close finishes and that will now be able to eliminate all controversies related to close finishes,” he said.
Seven races are carded for the day with the ‘B’ & Lower event being the feature.
