It is pure pleasure for me, on behalf of the government and all Guyana, to express formal congratulations to Guyana’s Champion Sevens Rugby team.
Winning the Central American and Caribbean Sevens Rugby Championships title in its inaugural year is symbolic of many values and behaviors in Guyana that is re-emerging as a Regional fore in the world of sport. These values and virtues include pride, discipline, patriotism, dedication and selflessness to name but a few.
The victory also underscored what the joint coalition of Public and Private sector enterprise could achieve. Amidst all of our socio-economic challenges, the contributions of corporate Guyana have resulted in our victory in a sport that is fast becoming a favourite in this part of the world. It is wonderful therefore for Guyana to be at the forefront and pinnacle at this stage of its development.
Congratulations to the Male team; to the Guyana Olympic Association, to the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) and its indefatigable Christopher Nascimento to the North American and Caribbean Rugby Union (NACRA) and the International Rugby Board (IRB) who must now appreciate the organisational abilities of Guyana to be an international venue and host; to the Technical advisor Mr. Whipple and his coaches; to the Manager and staff of the National Stadium Providence and of course, to the growing Legion of Rugby fans who answered the call to lend support to a worthy, now champion team.
History was created when we hosted this Olympic type tournament. History has now been vindicated. This first set of congratulations is made in anticipation of still another triumph to come – the NACRA championship this weekend (today and tomorrow).
Congrats Sevens Rugby Champions. Continue to make Guyana Proud.

Minister of Sport showers praise on NACRA female champions, Guyana
“Your victory is symbolic of what Guyanese womanhood can achieve.” Inspired no doubt by the unparalleled achievement of their male counterparts over the weekend Guyana’s Women’s Sevens Rugby Champions lived up both to their names and the expectations of the growing number of fans of this sport.
Retaining the NACRA Championship title the Guyanese women achieved a number of things: they demonstrated the successful results of the collaboration between government and the corporate and private sector; they illustrated the strength and sporting capacities of females in any game they commit their minds and skills to; they, as their male champion counterparts did on (Sunday), announced to the sporting world, that one version of Rugby has arrived at the highest levels in Guyana. The government and people of Guyana hails this NACRA Women’s Sevens Rugby victory is symbolic of what Guyanese womanhood can achieve, even in an environment where a few men tend to disregard and abuse our females our most precious human resource.
The Ministry of Sport again thanks the GRFU, the international organisers, our corporate sponsors, the coaching staff and venue managers.
Thanks too to the fans who cheered on our Rugby ladies. Congrats ladies, you are as golden as the medals you collected on behalf of your Country.

Singh closing in on Langer’s record in England
National middle order batsman Vishaul Singh moved one step closer to former Australian Test batsman Justin Langer’s 20-year-old record of most runs in a single season in the Kent Division One League in England
The left-handed Guyanese, needing to score 350 runs in the 8 remaining games of the season, was denied a chance to lower the target last week when his team (Sandwich Town Cricket Club) only needed to chase 53 for victory against Ashford Town Cricket Club.
However this weekend he didn’t let his chance to bat go to waste when he stepped to the crease with his team in trouble at 20 for 2 in the 5th over. The GCC batsman, who made his First-Class debut this year, scored a solid 75 not out to help his team chase down the target of 200 set by Whitsable Cricket Club who lost by 4 wickets.
He now requires 275 runs from the remaining 6 games to reach the long standing 1020-run record and said while the record is very much in his thoughts he is hoping to help his side gain promotion next year.
“I continue to bat really well this season and I am looking forward to scoring more runs and helping us get promoted into the premier league next year. Hopefully the record comes along the way” Singh told Kaieteur Sport from his flat in England yesterday.

Rain washes out dead rubber
Cricinfo – Persistent rain in Port-of-Spain washed out the inconsequential match without a ball being bowled. Both Canada and Leeward Islands, winless in the tournament, bagged a point each when the umpires called it off an hour and a half after the scheduled start.
The tournament moved from Barbados to Trinidad but the weather in the country, over the last couple of days at least, hasn’t been very encouraging. Dark clouds enveloped the ground in the afternoon and it cast doubts as to whether the second game of the day, between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, would take place.
Result: Canada v Leeward Islands – Match abandoned.
