John upsets number 10 seed at CAC Games
– Women’s Table Tennis Singles underway
Guyana’s United States-based table tennis scholarship recipient, Michelle John raised eyebrows yesterday when play commenced in the first stage of the Women’s Singles contest at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championship in Puerto Rico.
She was the one player to cause an upset beating the host nation’s Jerica Marrero, who is seeded number 10, in three straight games in her opening duel. It was an upset according to the seeding, but not according to history as John maintained her stronghold.
The 20-year-old John had met Marrero on two previous occasions according to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in competitions in the Caribbean. John reportedly had beaten the Puerto Rican both times, which gave her the mental edge yesterday.
Throughout the duel, John was calm, totally focused and seized every opportunity when a chance arose. Perhaps there were very good reasons for her attitude in the match, her practiced approach and ability to see an opponent who was starting to wilt.
Maybe John’s mental strength came from the fact that she is studying psychology at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, United States of America. The world’s great players will tell you that a strong mind is a big factor in the big matches.
She certainly showed that in San German, Puerto Rico on the sixth morning of the events, which demonstrated that she has a deep understanding of the mental attributes needed for sport. She had some comments for the ITTF after her remarkable opening.
“Yes, I’d beaten Jerica before, so I was confident before the match”, John said, adding, “Today I tried to be energetic and make sure I was the first to attack. I tried to play without fear, and to be positive.”
John joined illustrious company with the victory. Other big-name success came from Colombia’s Paula Medina and Joahana Araque, Venezuela’s Fabiola Ramos and Mexico’s Yadira Silva, who all came through their opening matches without trouble.
