– millions in goods lost
Tameshwar Ramroop of Canal # 1 says the loss of his goods may cripple him financially. Ramroop had just brought in a container of a new brand of biscuits for his wholesale customers and was preparing to unload it. Shortly before 15.00 hrs yesterday, it was noticed that the container which was parked on the parapet alongside the Canal 1 Public Road was leaning towards the canal. Ramroop says he tried to contact the company which brought the container for assistance, as he realised that the earth was soft where the container was parked. Before he could get a response, the wooden slats that were supporting the container gave way and it toppled into the canal.
The businessman tried to retrieve what he could with the help of neighbours and other members of the community. Approximately 70% of the stock was damaged. Up to press time efforts were still being made to get the container out of the canal. Ramroop stated that although the stock was damaged, it still had to be cleared out since the plastic wrapping would likely compromise the drainage system.
