A blistering run down the homestretch was all that it took for Senior Council Marcel Crawford’s Night Crescendo to create one of the big upset for the year in the horseracing circle.
The racehorse steamed to front on a wet and slippery day to outshine its opponents and take the feature C class event when the Rising Sun Turf Club in collaboration with the Brotherhood of St Andrew in the Anglican Diocese staged their annual Fund Raising Charity Horserace Meet at the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club on Sunday last.
Despite the inclement weather a fair size crowd was on hand to witness the animals go through their paces as seven races were held during the day which saw a number of exciting and close finishes which by and large was incident free.
It was a stunning performance by Night Crescendo which was a rank outsider in the event and guided by Yap Drepaul to take the Banks DIH Limited sponsored event along with the $400,000 top prize and the Banks DIH trophy.
Putting his disappointment behind after finishing third in the F class event Mr. Crawford moved his ever improving steed up in class to challenge for championship honours among the big guns. Pre race favourites Sweet Caramel of the Customs Stable with Navin on board and Delmur Gold of the Elcock stable being piloted By Paul Delph, started as predicted as the two animals went after each other in a continuous battle for the lead with Night Crescendo well positioned just being the leaders.
As its animals started their surge for the finish line it was Night Crescendo that had enough kick it barge to front to take the gold, from Delmur Gold in a close finish in the1300 meters race, to send a signal that it will be the horse to beat. Sweet Carmel had a bitter taste as it finished third.
In the co-feature event for the three year old animals Bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies, which had a $250,000 first prize on offer compliments of the Norman Singh stable, with the Chico Singh Trophy on offer, Zelona of the Shariff stable with Mark Vassy on board won the event with a convincing run, to capture the gold ahead of Gabriel’s Gold. Sky is the limit had it limitations as it finished third in the 1300M event which was the distance for all the races
The Day’s proceeding began with Laura lee in Flight of the Customs Racing stable with Navin on mount relishing the wet condition to squeeze past stablemate The Gap and Night Crescendo in a close finish to take the F class race and the $160,000 winners money and trophy compliments of Dr. Phillip Da Silva.
Nordan Jr. of the Cortland stable of Mahaicony and ridden by Drepaul had its first win in the Two year old event for horses Bred and Born in Guyana as it stroll away with the $150,000 winners money and trophy sponsored by A. Ally and Sons ahead of Kevin, Nigesty and Speed Vision, all suffering speed wobbles.
The H class event with had a first prize of $140,000 saw Prospectors Pride of the Jumbo Jet Stable with Yap Drepaul in the saddles showing good prospects to take the crown from Casino Royal as Vanessa stumbled close to the finish.
There was nothing funny or one sided in the I class event which was won by Funny Side of the Gray stable as it creamed off the $120,000 ahead of the De Gump, Infinity, and Little Spike.
De Gump was the winner of the GT&T sponsored I 3 contest for winners of one race and lower and the $120,000 money and trophy. Infinity came in second ahead of Mona Lisa and Spread the news.
Over $3M in cash along with trophies were on offer, while some 55 horses took part in the day’s event.
Season jockey Yap Drepaul and apprentice Mark Vassy were once again the outstanding riders on show and they received trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda market.
The Anglican Diocese of Guyana took the opportunity to thank the crowd, the business community, and the police for supporting the venture. The organisers were also high in praise for the media for giving the activity the necessary coverage and helping to make it successful. (Samuel Whyte)

Herlando Allicock hospitalized after losing effort, Jordan and Sandiford win
The dismal performance of local amateur boxers participating in the 21st Central American and Caribbean championships in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico was broken when according to late reports, Dexter Jordan and Ray Sandiford won their fights to move into the medal round.
The drought had continued earlier when Herlando Allicock lost his bout last Sunday evening. Reports coming out of that American state are that Allicock was outclassed. Shortly after the bout the Guyanese pugilist was rushed to the hospital where he was reportedly diagnosed with a rare medical condition where an air bubble was discovered to be in the right artery of his heart.
Jordon and featherweight Sandiford were reported to have turned in excellent performances even though details were sketchy.
Meanwhile Chef-de-Mission of the Guyanese team, Deion Nurse intimated that Aliann Pompey, Marian Burnette and Cleveland Forde will take to the tracks later on in pursuit of prestigious accolades in the finals of the 400m, 800m and the 1500m races, respectively.
