Banks hosts CAC teams at Thirst Park
– official curtain-call for competition
With the beaming presence of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Rugby winners, hosts Guyana and the other teams that participated in the competition, local beverage giants Banks DIH officially brought the curtains down on the tournament at Thirst Park Sunday night.
The company held a dinner for the teams and officials that participated in the first CAC Rugby competition. Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) President, Kit Nascimento said the hosting of the event and Guyana’s winning performance was historic.
“We are creating history because for the first time we have got a gold medal in an Olympic-type sport. Permit me to congratulate the teams, you have played some magnificent Rugby; good and clean Rugby,” the former West Indies Rugby Union boss said.
In addition, Nascimento believed that the participating teams that included: Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Costa Rica and Venezuela lived up to expectations and proved that first class Rugby belongs in the region.
Banks DIH Communications Manager, Troy Peters apologised for the absence of the Chairman, Clifford Reis and Sales and Marketing Director, George McDonald, who were both unable to be at the gala event because of what he called “prior commitments”.
“It is indeed a privilege to attend this special function to honour the participating teams.
I played rugby during my high school years… so I feel very much at home this evening among my Rugby friends and fellow sport administrators,” Peters indicated.
He said that the sport has grown over the years and thanked the GRFU for their efforts. He added that North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) and International Rugby Board (IRB) is also deserving of kudos for allowing Guyana be hosts.
“Banks DIH and the Coca Cola Company are indeed pleased to be associated with this historic event, our support for Rugby over the years is well known being the main sponsor of the Annual Banks Sevens. Banks will continue to offer its support to Rugby,” he noted.
According to Peters, the company’s involvement in the sport laid the foundation for their success at the CAC event and events in the pass. President of the Guyana Olympic Association K. Juman Yassin thanked the Government of Guyana for their support.
