Just a few days after they had managed to clinch sponsorship packages from two corporate entities to facilitate the successful staging of the 11th Pan American Karate Championships, scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) from August 12-15, the executive of the Karate Federation received a cheque valued $300,000 a contribution meant to assist with the general preparations for the championships.
Master Frank Woon-a-Tai collected on behalf of the local Karate Federation while Public Relations and Events Manager (Digicel), Shonette Moore handed over the gift on behalf of her organization.
Ms Moore endorsed her organization’s commitment to local sports activities saying that the executive of Digicel was extremely delighted to assist towards the successful staging of the championships. In response, Master Woon-a-Tai expressed heartfelt gratitude to Digicel while assuring that the local karatekas would fight hard to procure top accolades at the championships.
More than 80 local karatekas would join more than 300 of their counterparts from fifteen countries competing for top honours in the championships. Also, several high level karate executives are expected in the country to view the championships. Among them are Chief Instructor of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), 10th Dan Teruyuki Okazaki and Chief Vice Instructor of the ISKF, Yutaka Yaguchi.

Boxers winding down preparations as ProAm fight night looms
By Michael Benjamin
With just three days to go before they enter the ring, the boxers scheduled to participate in the sixth edition of the ProAm Boxing card are all rearing to go.
All of the fighters are currently wrapping up preparations and appear to be in kittle trim condition.
Over at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Albouystown, Debbie Tyson is winding down training for her highly anticipated bout against Pauline London.
The two fighters had quite a lot to say to each other at the signing ceremony a few weeks ago and will now have to shelve their bravado and replace it with punches. London seems to have developed a confidence after thrashing Shelly ‘The Boom’ Gibson, not once, but twice.
She, however, dropped a points decision to Sharon Warde and is now anxious to redeem herself at the expense of Tyson.
The latter fighter has other ideas and despite a prolonged absence from the ring, has vowed to dole out a licking to London.
Fans would just have to be at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) to witness the unfolding action.
Another anticipated thriller is between Edmond DeCleau and Troy Lewis.
Both boxers are determined to win this fight and earn bragging rights in the process. DeCleau has had epic encounters against Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones while Lewis has secured the record of the fastest knockout in the ProAm card after a two minute shutdown of Rudolph Fraser. An interesting battle is in the making.
As if those bouts are not enough, fans could expect solid action in the heavyweight clash between Anthony Augustin and Kurt Best. The former pugilist needs no introduction to the boxing public.
He drew his first bout against Clyde Williams before losing out to Mitchell Rogers in his second. Undaunted, he returned to capture a lopsided points decision over Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes.
On the contrary, Best is a mean fighter who also packs a punch, is yet to score a victory in his relatively young career. His claim to fame is the heavyweight contest against Trinidadian heavyweight, Kirston Manswell when the two met on the under card of the Pamela London/Margaret Salazar world title bout at the Splashmins Resort. He lost that bout but not before turning in a spirited performance that set the venue alight.
This will be a fight between two strong punchers and it would be a surprise if the fight lasts the full distance
Once again, those fans unable to visit the venue may view the bout live on NCN Channel 11.
Those attending the actual fight would be required to pay $500 for admission.
