The Guyanese boxing contingent participating in the 21st Central American and Caribbean championships in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico is still to make an impression some three days after the boxing activities would have commenced.
However, the athletic contingent remained in contention for medals with Aliann Pompey contesting in 400m last evening.
Chef-de-Mission of the Guyanese team, Deion Nurse related that all of the boxers to have fought to date have suffered losses with team leader, lightweight Clevon Rock experiencing the most humiliating.
Rock lost to Dominican Republic boxer, Arias Wellinpong by a decisive 18-3 margin while junior/lightweight Bert Braithwaite surrendered a 13-4 verdict to Trinidadian Aaron Hassette.
Welterweight contender, Devon Boatswain fared no better and dropped a lopsided 13-5 verdict to a Nicaraguan fighter to round off a miserable performance by the Guyanese boxing contingent to date.
Herlando Allicock was due to open his campaign last night while featherweight Ray Sandiford and flyweight, Dexter Jordon will be in action later in the week.
Nurse could not offer a technical explanation for the dismal performances of the boxers and coaches, Sebert Blake and Terrence Poole could not be immediately reached.
However, Nurse said that the Guyanese boxers to have fought so far have all been outclassed. The Chef-de Mission said that the performance of the local hockey team compensated to an extent.
He said that the women played their hearts out and managed to hold on to a 1-1 draw against Barbados after the latter team had scored the first goal.
Nurse also reported that Adam Harris romped home 3rd in the Men’s 100m semi-finals heat while Gordon McKenzie unfortunately pulled a hamstring in the other semi-final heat that ruled him out of contention. He said that Aliann Pompey has been performing creditably and was in the lineup in the 400m semi-finals last night.
The boxers had started their quest for medals on a negative note after arriving at their final destination minus their training gears.
They, along with 4 hockey players left the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timerhi last Saturday morning for a few hours stopover at the Piarco Airport, Trinidad and Tobago, but ended up spending the night and most of the following day in the Twin Island Republic after Liat Airlines encountered problems.
They arrived in Mayaguez; Puerto Rico to inclement weather conditions that had forced a further postponement of the opening ceremony. Shortly afterwards Nurse had explained that the situation had returned to a semblance of normalcy.
The boxing team manager had taken a decision to purchase new gears to facilitate the boxers’ training sessions. The local teams are being housed at the Central American Villa in Mayaguez Puerto Rico.
