Sixty-nine-year old Bernice Savitrie Herbert, a mother of six, was killed, and three persons are nursing injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital, after being the victims of a motor vehicle accident opposite Crane Old Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), yesterday.
Herbert of 1092 Crane Housing Scheme was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The injured are Eugene Wilson, 55, who has a severed finger; Randolph Wilson, 59, who is suffering from lacerations and bruises and Wanda Ramkissoon 35, who is critical.
All the injured are from 221 Crane Housing Scheme WCD.
According to eyewitnesses, the four persons were standing awaiting the arrival of a minibus at 9:35 hrs, when a car that was travelled at a fast pace, collided with the group, then slammed into an electrical pole next to Two Brother’s waste disposal services.
“The car pitched the big lady about 30 feet away from whey she de standing and the rest of them get serious hit. One lady finger was cut off.”
Investigations revealed that the car was a silver 212 Carina, PMM 1191.
The vehicle was later taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police station, while the driver was placed in police custody pending charges.
The deceased woman’s son Peter Mark said he heard of his mother’s demise after a friend at the West Demerara Regional Hospital contacted him and related the horrific news.
Marks said that upon visiting the hospital, he positively identified his mother’s remains.
“It was horrible.”
However, he contacted the police who told him that he would need to give a statement to a traffic rank.
He added that the driver of the car was involved in another accident previously.
“He run into a trench he license should a get take away since then, now look what he gone and do.”

Pedal cyclist killed on No. 12 Public Road
The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 21:40 hours on Saturday on the No.12 Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice, which resulted in the death of pedal cyclist Somail Ramsingh, 18, of No.11 Village, also on the West Coast of Berbice.
Investigations conducted by the police have revealed that a silver grey motorcar, PLL 7837, which was being driven by Albert Singh of Lower Kara Kara, Linden/Soesdyke Highway was proceeding along the roadway when it is alleged by the driver that Ramsingh rode across the road into the path of his vehicle and was struck down.
Ramsingh was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Reports are that Ramsingh, who reportedly lived alone, was riding his cycle without shirt when he was struck by the car. Residents in the area reportedly heard a loud impact and ran to the scene where they saw the man’s body lying on the road, while his severely mangled bicycle was nearby.
The driver had reported that he did not see the cyclist until it was too late. He was reportedly heading to New Amsterdam to visit his mother in law and at the time had his wife, children and a 17-year old relative in the vehicle. Some of the occupants of the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and released.
The vehicle is presently impounded in the Fort Wellington Police compound, while the driver is still in custody assisting with investigation.
