Guyana’s Under-17 Junior Jaguars have advanced to the Second Stage of the Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualifying competition following their 7-0 mauling of Aruba in their final Group C game yesterday afternoon in Roseau, Dominica.
Needing to win by a big margin to ensure that close rivals the Netherlands Antilles would be out of the reckoning to win the group, the young Guyanese put on a fine display led by a pair of goals each from Randy Persaud and Kerwyn Benjamin to book their second round spot in Jamaica where they will meet Haiti and the winner of Group D.
The Netherlands Antilles who needed to win their game against Dominica (final game of the group) by 10 clear goals to top the group, could only muster a 3-1 win.
The intentions of the Junior Jaguars were made known quite early, six minutes into the game Sherwyn Lewis tucked in the first goal and by the end of the first half Benjamin (41st) and Domini Garnett (45th) had the Guyanese 3-0 up.
Not feeling too comfortable with the first half tally, the Junior Jaguars stepped up the tempo in the final 45 minutes and were rewarded with 4 more goals.
Pernell Schultz continued his fine form ending with three goals.
After scoring in every game, he opened the scoring in the half with a 55th minute effort. Seven minutes later, Benjamin rocked the nets to achieve his double to also end with three goals while Randy Persaud closed out a vintage performance by the Guyanese with a double of his own hitting the network in the 73rd and 85th minutes.
The team under the guidance of Head Coach Sampson Gilbert did not have the best weather to prepare and also encountered a number of challenges in getting to Dominica. They have however showed great focus and resolve after drawing with the Netherlands Antilles 2-2 in their first game on Tuesday one day after arriving on the Island on Monday.
Once they settled in, it was a different ball game. They defeated the host country 5-0 on Thursday before taking care of Aruba yesterday, scoring a total of 12 goals and only conceding 2.
When contacted yesterday for a comment on the teams’ performance, Guyana Football Federation boss Colin Klass said he was very excited and pleased with their achievement of the Junior Jaguars.
“I would like to extend on behalf of the entire football family, our heartfelt congratulations to the team and Technical staff for doing us proud.
They’ve worked hard and faced the challenges which came their way admirably; it is the start of a long journey and will surely get tougher but I am confident that these lads will again do us proud.”
Kaieteur Sport also joins the Federation in extending congratulations to the Junior Jaguars. The team is expected home today.
