– Ball handling was excellent – TD Whipple
By Rawle Welch
NACRA champions Guyana sounded an ominous warning to all after producing a dazzling display of Sevens rugby as the CAC Championship opened yesterday at the National Stadium.
Led by the experienced trio that included Captain Claudius Butts, Kevin McKenzie and Theodore Henry the locals recovered from a nervous start against the Bahamas in their opening match to rout every other opponent thereafter which must now have all pretenders to the throne wondering if anything could be done to stop the rampaging juggernauts from South America.
Backs Butts and McKenzie were unstoppable, scoring eight tries between them, while the dreadlocked Theodore Henry made a similar amount of conversions as Guyana remained unbeaten throughout the day and on course to achieve the first of two titles, the other one being the successful defence of their NACRA championship.
In their first encounter against the Bahamas, Guyana playing before a small band of supporters fell behind early when the visitors scored after McKenzie’s attempted clearance kick just outside the Guyanese backline was blocked and retrieved by an opposing player, who ended over the try-line.
They, however, managed to level the game just before the half through McKenzie, who sprinted down the left touchline, evading two tackles in the process, before scoring his first try.
Henry made the conversion to make it 7-7 at the half.
The Guyanese took the lead in the second period when Butts one of the quickest players burst downfield drew two tacklers, before laying off a pinpoint inside pass to the ever present McKenzie, who darted through the hole for a try.
Henry once again converted.
The locals’ advantage was stretched even further as overseas-based Dominic Lespierre burst through three defenders to score a try.
Bouyed by their early success, the Guyanese crushed successive opponents Cayman Islands and Costa Rica, giving up no points in the process.
Speaking about the team’s performance Technical Director Joe Whipple said that he was extremely pleased with the ball handling, but felt that the defending needed to step up a bit.
“I thought we improved our play as the day progressed and I was glad that all 12 players got an opportunity to get starts,” Whipple stated.
He added that if the team play to their full potential opposing teams will have a pretty hard time holding them.
He disclosed that the general mood among members is good.
Meanwhile, all eight teams attended the Opening Ceremony which was witnessed by Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Guyana Olympic Association President K.A Juman Yassin with the National Anthem sung by Miss Jessica Xavier.
Today is the final day of competition.
