Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) new Skipper says his team’s aim is not just to participate but the win the Caribbean 20/20 Championship and qualify to represent the West Indies in the Club Champions League in South Africa in September.
Considered the minnows in Zone ‘B’ which include Barbados, Guyana and the Windward Islands, CCC’s brilliant performance chasing down Barbados’ 180 and then only losing by virtue of scoring less sixes after a fielding blunder off the final ball of the Super Over following a sensational tie, now leaves them a real contender for a place in the semis as they face Guyana in the 2nd round today.
After defeating a strong Windward Islands in their first game on Friday, Guyana cannot afford to underrate the students after their showing against Barbados and with any team capable of winning in the 20/20 format a keen contest is anticipated today from 14:00 here at the Kensington Oval.
Travis Dowlin again showed his value for Guyana in 20/20 cricket with a crucial 60 against the Windward’s and although the other Test players in the side (Ramnaresh Sarwan, Sewnarine Chattergoon & Narsingh Deonarine) failed to fire, teenage debutant Jonathon Foo exploded onto the scene with an unbeaten 24 from 10 balls to give Guyana a 5-wicket win.
Guyana’s fielding was ragged and apart from the experienced Lennox Cush who had 4-25, Davindra Bishoo (3-23) and to a lesser extent Chris Barnwell (0-22) the bowling lacked punch and Royston Crandon’s penultimate over of the match produced 26 runs and nearly cost Guyana the game.
Today, against a team with little to lose and everything to prove, the Guyanese will need to lift their game in the field and get more meaningful contributions from their middle order.
Victories in their last two games could still take CCC into the semi-finals and with Guyana to face Barbados in their final preliminary round game in Trinidad on Thursday they will want to win today to virtually secure their spot in the final four.
Winners of the inaugural regional 20/20 in 2006 and beaten in the semis by Jamaica in the last competition two years ago, Guyana are one of the favorites along with Jamaica and defending champions Trinidad and Tobago to qualify for the Club Champions League in South Africa in September by winning this tournament.
Rommel Currency and Miles Bascombe will hope to reproduce another shot-filled opening partnership like they did against Barbados but they could find the going tougher against the off-spin of Lennox Cush with the new ball. Cush is a 20/20 specialist and one of the better off-spinners in this format in the world and like against the Windward’s, his four overs could be crucial today.
Ryan Wiggins’ confidence is high after his fine batting against Barbados and Floyd Reifer is full of experience. Phillips and wicketkeeper Chad Walton recently played Test cricket and can also contribute with the bat for CCC.
Esuan Crandon is always a hard worker for his country but seems not fully fit while Steven Jacobs, Assad Fudadin and Paul Wintz could again be left on the bench as the South Americans aim to make it two wins in a row.
Pacer Gilford Moore who bowled the Super Over against Barbados could want to prove a point to his countrymen while spinners Kavesh Kantasingh and Ryan Austin could again be used to open the bowling for a CCC unit which is improving all the time.Friday’s win against the Windwards, who like Barbados and CCC are still in the hunt for a semi-final spot, was not a clinical performance and today the Ramnaresh Sarwan led side, without the experience of the region’s leading batsman Shiv Chanderpaul who opted to play for his English County instead of his country, will need to improve in all areas if they are to dethrone T&T as regional 20/20 champions.
The two oldest players in the side (Dowlin & Cush) could again play major roles with bat and ball respectively but like Imran Khan showed in Antigua in 2006, Jonathon Foo could be the new kid on the block to attract the most attention. Its early days yet but his blistering knock in the first match under pressure, is an encouraging sign.
