– according to IAAF Competition Rule
By Edison Jefford
National sprinter, Chavez Ageday went to the International Association of Athletics Federations [IAAF] World Junior Championship in Moncton, Canada as an “unqualified athlete” or wildcard entrant, which meant that he could have only competed in one event.
Another section of the print media reported on Friday that Ageday expressed disappointment over the fact that he was not registered for the 200m at the event, which brought into question the athlete’s knowledge on the event’s competition rules and manual.
Appendix B of the ‘Entry Standards’ under Competition Information, of the IAAF Handbook for the event is unambiguous on the participation of “unqualified athletes”. Ageday should have had this information at his disposal to save the embarrassment.
“Members who have no male and/or no female qualified athletes whom they wish to enter may enter one unqualified male athlete and/or one unqualified female athlete in one event of the Championships (except the Combined Events, 10,000m, 3000m Steeplechase and 5000m Women),” the IAAF rule on the subject states.
Under a headline “200m agony for Ageday: finds he was not registered”, the top local sprinter said that he felt he could have done better in the 200m. Ageday had already used up his allotted entry to compete in the 100m where he returned 10.87 seconds.
Ageday did not get far in the 100m and the two pertinent questions in this matter is why officials here did not inform the athlete that he can only compete in one event and why he did not reserve his one place for the 200m if he felt that he had better chances.
If Ageday did not know that he could have competed in one event then the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) should have apprised him, having been privy to that information prior to his departure for the prestigious World Junior Championships.
Athletes do not go to those high-profiled events to seek information on their participation. Those are rules and guidelines that are sorted out months in advance. It is alarming if at Ageday’s level of competition, he is still fishing for information about his sport.
No athlete should depend exclusively on their governing body for information about their sports discipline when such information is available in electronic and print formats globally. It is part of the responsibilities of athletes to become knowledgeable about their sport.
