Hosts Guyana will open their pursuit for top honours in the CAC Sevens Rugby Championship against Costa Rica, starting from 11:50 hrs today.
The Guyanese who’re the defending four-time NACRA champions have selected a strong twelve-man squad which will be captained by the experienced West Indies skipper Claudius Butts and include players the calibre of Theodore Henry, Richard Staglon, Kevin McKenzie, Dominic Lespierre, Rupert Giles and Elwin Chase.
The other players selected are Christopher Singh, Dane Parks, Ryan Gonsalves, Dwayne Schroeder and Ronald Mayers.
Guyana is placed in Group A along with Costa Rica, Bahamas and the Cayman Islands, while Group B consists of Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Mexico.
The Guyanese are seeded #1 along with Venezuela, while nemesis T&T is joint second seed with Costa Rica with the Bahamas third seed, the Cayman Islands fourth, Jamaica fifth and Mexico at the bottom.
The other scheduled matches that will follow the Opening Ceremony which commences at 10:00 hrs are Venezuela versus Mexico at 11:00 hrs; T&T vs. Jamaica at 11:25 hrs; Bahamas vs. Cayman Islands at 12:15hrs with a 30 minutes break to be taken at 12:40 hrs.
The tournament resumes at 13:10 hrs with Venezuela vs. Jamaica; T&T vs. Mexico at 13:35 hrs; Guyana vs. Cayman Islands at 14:00hrs; Bahamas vs. Costa Rica at 14:25 hrs to be followed by a break at 14:50 hrs.
After the intermission, T&T vs. Venezuela at 15:05 hrs; Jamaica vs. Mexico at 15:30 hrs; Guyana vs. Bahamas at 15:55 hrs and the final game of the day Cayman Islands vs. Costa Rica at 16:20 hrs.
The general public is encouraged to come out and witness top class rugby and cheer Guyana on to a successful defence of their title.
