Guyana played to a nil-all draw against Bermuda in their opening game of the Central American and Caribbean Hockey Championships which got underway in heavily overcast conditions on Thursday in Puerto Rico.
According to a report from Coach Philip Fernandes, the Guyanese girls though being the more dominant team squandered many chances to score and must be disappointed with the eventual outcome.
The match had to be started two hours later than the proposed time and although the game began on an even keel, the Guyanese took the greater part of the first half getting settled into the confident and controlled brand of hockey which they are capable of playing.
The half ended with the score at 0-0 with few good opportunities to score by either side.
The second period saw a different picture emerge as the South Americans began to dominate possession and push the game into the Bermuda half.
However, although creating many threatening opportunities and pressuring the opponent in the final 20 minutes of the half, the Guyanese failed to convert their chances, before the final whistle sounded with the teams scoreless.
In other results, top ranked Trinidad took the full 3 points earlier in the day by defeating fifth seed Barbados 3-0 and now lead Group A with eight seeded Guyana and fourth seeded Bermuda tied for second place with 1 point each and fifth seeded Barbados at the bottom without points.
Group B saw second seeded Mexico destroy seventh seeded Dominican Republic 6-0, while third seeded Jamaica beat hosts, sixth seeded Puerto Rico, by 3-1.
Fernandes commented that his team played well aside from his disappointment in their finishing.
He explained that the competition was much bigger than any the girls had ever been to before and, being the least experienced team, it took them a while to relax and play comfortably.
With the second half of the match being more in Guyana’s favour, Fernandes remains optimistic, despite Guyana’s next opponent being Barbados, who they recently lost a 3-game series.
The women’s competition resumes today with Guyana taking on Barbados and Trinidad clashing with Bermuda in Pool A.
Jamaica and Mexico then square off for the lead in Group B, while Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic battle to avoid the bottom of the pool.
