Police are yet to track down the suspects in four brutal murders that occurred in the interior within the past four months. Two of the murders occurred in the lawless Mowasi Creek area, near Konawaruk.
On April 18, 40-year-old Troy Hanover, also called Troy Koster or ‘Shine Rice’, was hacked to death during a quarrel with another man at a shop in Mowasi Landing.
According to reports, Hanover had his stomach sliced open by the suspect, who had accused Hanover of stealing a quantity of raw gold. The killer then fled the scene.
The shop where the murder occurred was subsequently torched while the proprietress was at the Mahdia Police Station informing ranks about the incident. On June 21, Mowasi Landing was the scene of a deadly gun battle, which claimed the lives of miner Davindra Williams and 35-year-old Oswald Bourne, of Block 22 Wismar.
Clifton Andrews, an employee of Williams, was badly wounded.
It is alleged that Williams and Andrews were walking along a trail when Bourne and another man, known as ‘Blacka’, ambushed them.
Williams and Bourne were killed during the ensuing shootout. ‘Blacka’ fled the scene and is still at large.
While reports indicate that robbery was the motive for the attack, Bourne’s relatives insist that he was not a criminal. They allege that he was murdered during a dispute.
Bourne’s brother and sister-in-law operate a small boutique at Mowasi Landing.
And on June 26, Vanburn Hanover, 33, of Lot 50 Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, was found bleeding and unconscious outside a Mahdia nightclub. A length of wood was near to the victim.
According to reports, the suspect, who police have identified as 21-year-old Osafa Garraway, had accosted Hanover after the miner won an undisclosed sum of money while gambling with another man.
Hanover left the scene, but the suspect followed the miner and struck him on the head with a piece of wood. The attacker then fled the scene.
Hanover was taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he died while receiving medical treatment.
The fugitive, who is unemployed, is said to be a ‘known troublemaker” in the community. Then, just a week ago, John Philander, a shopkeeper, was hacked to death at Echerak, Potaro.
According to reports, Philander had left a man in charge of his shop and upon his return, he discovered that several items could not be accounted for.
An argument allegedly ensued during which the suspect hacked Philander to death before fleeing the scene. Police officials and interior residents have complained about the proliferation of illegal firearms in Mahdia and other locations. The police are also hampered by the rough terrain and the unavailability of vehicles to traverse the areas.
