Detective Constable Parsram Samsundar, who was viciously attacked with a cutlass on Wednesday night, says that he was targeted because he had been taking a strong stand against drug dealers in Mahaica.
The officer who is presently a patient in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital said that his attacker is a known drug dealer in his community.
Samsundar, who hails from Riverview, Mahaica, said that his passion to see his village come out successful has caused him to upset a few who are bent on criminality.
According to the policeman, his attacker is a known drug dealer in the area with whom he had a number of encounters. Samsundar said that he had recently organised a police raid to catch his attacker in the act.
However, Samsundar said that his attacker who has “high connections” in the police force was tipped off.
The officer said he was heading home on Monday night when he noticed his attacker with a cutlass in his hand standing on the road. He said a log had been placed across the roadway which caused him to stop.
“I was still on the bike when he started chopping me,” explained the officer. Samsundar further told Kaieteur News that he jumped off his bike and started running through a street.
The man said that his helmet fell off after he was running, and that was how his attacker was able to chop him to the head.
“I put my hands up trying to bar off the chops…and that is how I was chopped to my hands”.
With only a minibus in sight, the policeman quickly ran into the vehicle in an effort to escape from his attacker.
Samsundar said that the bus driver was reluctant but he persisted and entered the minibus.
“After I reach in the minibus I locked the door behind me…and that is what made the suspect retreat”.
The man said he was taken to the Cove and John Police Station, where he was quickly rushed to the Georgetown Hospital.
“All the time he was chopping me….he kept telling me that he was going to kill me”.
This newspaper was told that officers from the Criminal Investigation Department visited Samsundar in the hospital yesterday. It was unclear if the officers were able to get a statement from the rank.
The suspect, who is reported to be a fisherman, reportedly fled to sea immediately after the attack.
