West Indies cricket is at the crossroads and it is now that administrators in the various territories are agitating for broader initiatives to reinstate the sport to the level of competence as in the days of yore. Maybe it is with the sorry state of Regional cricket in mind that the administrators of the East Coast Cricket Board organized the Ninth Consecutive Annual Academy at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence, La Bonne Intention ECD.
More than 52 participants including 10 females participated in activities ranging from lectures on cricket issue to more serious topics drugs, HIV and teenaged sex among others.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony delivered the keynote address and lauded the executives of the East Coat Cricket Board for the smooth running of the occasion. The Minister also challenged the other sports associations to emulate the initiative. “We need to understand that sessions such as these are extremely important to the development of young people,” the Minister said. He further challenged administrators of other disciplines to adopt the methodology applied by the East Coast Cricket Association.
The Minister further spoke of the correlation of sports and education even as he pointed out that the just concluded initiative aids in pointing young people in the right direction. He then closed with a timely message for the participants; “If you want to make something of your future you have to start planning now,” the Minister cautioned.
Earlier in the programme, Master of Ceremonies, Daverteerth Anandjit welcomed those attending the ceremony even as he highlighted the high points of the course. Several of the participants then gave individual accounts of their perception of the effectiveness of the programme. The coordinator’s report was next on the agenda before the audience was treated to a skit by the participants on the adverse effects of peer pressure.
President of the Guyana Cricket Board, Chetram Singh and his East Coast Cricket Board counterpart, Bissoondial Singh also delivered brief remarks before the presentation of certificates which was conducted by former president of the East Coast Cricket Association, S.K. Singh.
The indoor facilitators were Edwin Seeraj, Daveteerth Anandjit, Siddarth Anandjit, SK Singh, Roger Harper, Renuka Anandjit, D. Rampersaud, Dr. Haynes, Penelope Harris, Ronald Williams, Claude Raphael, and Neil Kumar. The Cove and John Police, the Ministry of Health, and the Region Four REO also made contributions to the academy.
