Fernandes, the current National female champion who also copped the male award did not get past the semi final stage In Puerto Rico but had the opportunity to win gold in the doubles final where she teamed up with Keisha Jeffrey to win their semi-final team match 2-1 against the Guatemalan duo of Ackerman and Eva. The final was scheduled for last evening.
The men’s team of Arjoon and Pollard turned in good performances but unfortunately lost their quarter final doubles match 3-0 to Guatemala.
In Hockey which took place in Salinas almost 3 hours away from the main Games Village, the girls team put in a great effort to draw 0-0 with Bermuda (seeded higher than Guyana) in difficult circumstances – terrible rain and wind storrms – which caused much of the Island to be under a Tornado watch.
The female table tennis team of Trenace Lowe, Michelle John and Natalie Cummings lost 3-0 to Mexico while the men’s team of Paul David, Idi Lewis and Christopher Franklin also suffered by a similar margin against Venezuela. Despite the losses, both teams are looking forward to the individual events.
The lone female cyclist Claire Fraser successfully completed her Time Trials also on Wednesday in very windy conditions and placed 11th of 13 riders in a new Personal Best in the 20.7km event. According to Guyana’s Chef de Mission Deion Nurse, this country’s delegation to the Games on Wednesday proudly raised the Golden Arrowhead in the Games Village in Mayaguez.
Raising the flag was the youngest athlete and sole swimmer, Jessica Stephenson, who was accompanied by Nurse, the entire boxing team, the sole female cyclist, Claire Fraser, Boxing Manager Maurice Rajkumar, Cycling Coach Sean Greene and Swimming Manager, Davina Stephenson.
Presenting gifts to the Mayor of the Games Village, Mr. Nurse spoke of the pride of the team in attending the Games.
The flag raising was the second positive for the day (Wednesday) following swimmer Jessica Stephenson’s second outing in the pool where having been seeded 16th in the women’s 100m breast stroke she put in a great performance to finish 13th out of 22 swimmers, in the process achieving a new Personal Best of 1:15.63.
This is 15 year-old Stephenson’s first Senior Meet and it has been a great learning experience and preparation for October’s Commonwealth Games for which the Trinidad based swimmer has already made qualifying times.
Competing today will be Alonzo Graves (Cycling), Jessica Stephenson (Swimming) in the 50m breast. The female table tennis players face the Dominican Republic while the males oppose Panama.
The boxers will have their weigh in today also and will engage in their first bouts later today.
