Guyana’s Junior Jaguars inched closer to topping Group C of the Caribbean Football Union’s World Cup Qualifying competition when they hammered host team Dominica 5-0 in Roseau yesterday afternoon.
After coming from behind to draw with the Netherlands Antilles 2-2 on Tuesday, the Guyanese made no mistakes this time around as they marched to the top of the group on goal difference ahead of their rivals, Netherlands Antilles.
Guyana’s midfield produced the goods for them in wonderful fashion as three of the five goals came from them.
Pernell Schultz continued his fine form with the second goal in the 25th minute after the visitors were put ahead five minutes on by fellow midfielder Kerwyn Benjamin.
Another midfielder, Deshane Garnett added his name to the score sheet in the 31st minute as the half ended 3-0 in favor of the junior Jaguars.
the home team put up stiffer resistance in the second half as they kept the rampaging junior Jaguars at bay for most of the half. They did not possess the stamina to hold off the visitors for the entire half and finally cracked in the 75th minute when Forward Sherwyn Lewis rocked the nets.
The pressure began to tell on the home team to the extent that they scored against themselves with two minutes to game time.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Netherlands Antilles took care of Aruba who had defeated Dominica 2-1 in their opening game, 3-0.
The Junior Jaguars will be going all out for another big win when they play Aruba tomorrow in their final game at the same venue from 15:00hrs. The Netherlands Antilles will face Dominica in the final Group C game from 17:00hrs. only the winner of the group will advance to the second stage to face the host team Jamaica and Haiti who are both seeded along with the winner of group D.
