Organisers of the Berbice Exposition and Trade Fair, the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCC) has promised to make this year’s event the biggest and best so far.
That’s the word of the Coordinator of the Event and Treasurer of the organisation Tajpaul Adjodhea.
Adjodhea, speaking to the media yesterday, gave an outline of what to expect at this year’s exposition. The event, which is in its fifth year, will be held from today thru Monday, at the Rose Hall Community Centre in East Canje from 15:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs each day.
The opening ceremony commences at 17:00hrs.
An impressive opening ceremony has been planned, at which President Bharrat Jagdeo will give the feature address. Other keynote speakers include Minister of Trade and Tourism Manniram Persaud and Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Ramesh Dookhoo. Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha and Chamber President Imran Hamid will also give remarks.
The Shakti String Orchestra will be providing live entertainment on a nightly basis and will highlight the night’s cultural activity which also features performances from the Police Military Band. Indian and African cultural items, as well as performers from an Orealla cultural group and stand-up comedy are expected to be a part of the opening night’s activity.
During the opening ceremony the Region’s top six performers in this year’s National Grade Six Assessment examinations will also be honoured by the Chamber.
Adjodhea said that the 2010 Expo will be a special one since it will be held away from the usual venue for the first time.
The theme this year is ‘Promoting Economic Diversity ’, which the coordinator noted is quite fitting, in keeping with the country’s effort of diversifying instead of being one dimensional.
He said that what this means for Berbicians is that they have to gear themselves for the economic take-off that is expected to grip the county. “It is an opportunity for producers in Berbice and Guyana as a whole to help showcase themselves.”
The activity this year has been fully sponsored by a number of agencies including the Ministry of Agriculture, GT&T, Banks DIH, Digicel, GRDB, Nand Persaud and Company limited, NPG Packaging and Republic Bank.
Touching on the expo itself, the coordinator said that the response has been better this year and spaces have been completely taken up, while some agencies are on hold.
International participants from India will take part in the event.
A few new products will also be on show at the expo this year, while a number of companies plan to have big giveaways at the event.
According to Ajodhea, the activity will have the usual pomp and ceremony with the familiar booths showcasing a variety of things. There will also be games for adults and children alike.
Adjodhea also noted that for the past years the expo it has been incident free. Security is one of the main focuses and will be in full force again this year, with the Guyana Police Force and private security firms in charge.
Also speaking to the media was President of the CCC, Imran Hamid, who said it is his first major venture since he took over as President of the body. He said that the main focus this year is to raise enough funds to start construction of a permanent office for the Chamber. Another important project is to set up a permanent exhibition site for the Chamber. An area has been set aside and work is to begin soon.
So far, the CCC has spearheaded the construction of the first fire station at Rose Hall town which will service the Central Corentyne area. They also helped with the restoration of the Felix Austin Police College in B Division, which is situated at Adventure on the Corentyne.
