Dear Editor,
Observation is made of the campaign to dictate to the PNC with no regard or respect for the PNC’s rules. It seems that there is no end to those who stay from afar and who believe that they can dictate what the PNC and its leader must and should be doing.
If persons believe that they know best what the PNC needs and the party is not meeting this need to their satisfaction and if they are really committed to national change then they would channel their energies in a positive way to help, ensuring that they do not render useless, the very tool they need to fight corruption, crime and poor governance.
The rule of law must be paramount and not the rule of lawlessness
The PNCR is governed by procedures and practices which allow for leadership challenges at all levels. These are encouraged within the framework of the constitution which is paramount and with an abiding interest that shows respect for the will of the people and the rule of law.
It is this which the Party offers the nation as an alternative to the current dictatorial practices and lawless environment. It is this which our people will respect and which they desire. It is this which all law abiding supporters and people of Guyana must encourage and support.
The mandate given the PNC/R by a significant percent of the people at national elections is also shaped by and represented by the voting members of the party who determine its leadership. It is not handpicked and imposed by the minority after an unsuccessful leadership challenge. Those who have the party’s interest at heart and the nation’s interest at heart must help to maintain “just law and order” at all levels. This is the focus which party membership, all supporters and law abiding citizens must defend.
It is understandable that losing is not easy. Sometimes those who lose can become misguided and even destructive to the very cause and organisation they seek to lead, thus jeopardizing those whose interest they proclaim to be concerned about. However, in elections there will always be winners and losers regardless of how we put it. What is important is recognising the rights of all are upheld and that each is able to benefit equally without discrimination based on their choice of leader or preference, since each has the right by virtue of member ship to the group and society to partake equally.
The PNC offers this to those who contested the last congress but did not secure the majority winnings. We seek this same understanding and accommodation, this same right enshrined in our national politics where it must be recognised that each Guyanese is entitled to equal share of the nation’s resources. The party has therefore held steadfast to leading by examples of inclusiveness.
Those who ignore the rule of law and continue arguments to destabilize the party, believing they have an inherent right to rule and that this supersedes an elected right, are advised that the constitution of the party and the rule of law will forever reign supreme in the People’s National Congress Reform and remains the fundamental strength of any intended PNC government. Of necessity it should be recognised the importance of this to any quest for National government and persons are encouraged to call for an end to lawlessness not only in government but by factional elements in the PNCR which to date remains a viable alternative government.
All those who claim to love the party should be concerned about creating conditions likely to create divisions and fragmentation in our ranks since a united force is the best means of deterring any threats to the party and the vulnerable masses which it seeks to represent.
The members and supporters of the party are urged to keep focus and not be distracted by those who want to achieve their personal goal at the expense of building and creating an inclusive society.
