– They are great athletes – Whipple
The Director of the National Sevens teams Mike McCormack has the unenviable task of releasing the names of the final selection of the Guyana male and female teams to contest the CAC Rugby Championships and NACRA Tournament respectively yesterday, at Splashmin’s Resort.
The teams ended the brief period of encampment which according to McCormack was arranged to create solidarity among the players that could help them in making the right decisions on field and also to foster total commitment.
The Director said the occasion marked the culmination of four months of arduous work among the Men, adding that even though the Women came together for a shorter stint, they too underwent a similar routine of hard work that could hopefully result in both teams successfully retaining their NACRA titles and possibly in the former’s case attach the CAC crown.
“We have been able to raise the level of our fitness, commitment and abilities over the period, perhaps never achieved before,” McCormack acknowledged.
Technical Director Joe Whipple in his comments said that Guyana has got a good group of players and some great athletes and all of us should be proud of them.
“I hope that the Guyanese people embrace the kind of work that these two teams have done and come out and support them.
He added that the Camp served its purpose and everyone is in a positive frame of mind.
The Men’s team is (Forwards)- Theodore Henry, Dwayne Schroeder, Rupert Giles and Ronald Mayers; (Half-Backs) – Dominic Lespierre, Christopher Singh, Ryan Gonsalves and Troy Bascom; (Backs) – Claudius Butts (Captain), Elwin Chase and Kevin McKenzie and (Hooker) – Richard Staglon (Vice-Captain) with Technical Director Joe Whipple.
The Women’s squad is Sabola Gray (Captain), Colette Hope, Desaun Josiah, Latoya Cordis, Maureese Skeete, Grace Jarvis, Sheneeza Daniels, Nikita Davis, Andrea Lashley, Carren Skeete, Fiona Ward, Natasha Andrews, Tricia Munroe and Laurel Anderson with Alton Agard as Coach.
