Dear Editor,
For the first time in its history, the ruling UNC (and its coalition partners branded the Peoples Partnership) is heading for a massive victory in a local government election in Trinidad.
The most seats (electoral districts) the UNC has ever won were 64 and the most local bodies it has ever won are seven.
But in this election, the PP will trounce the PNM by more than two to one among the 134 seats and 14 local bodies up for grabs.
Prime Minister Kamla, as the PM is popularly called, and Minister Jack, as the Works Minister is called, have enormous appeal across the landscape, and are winning over many converts from the PNM to capture seats traditionally won by the PNM.
This conclusion is based on an analysis of the ongoing tracking poll being conducted by NACTA over the last couple of weeks. NACTA was founded by Trinidadian Vassan Ramracha in NY and has been conducting polls for 20 years around the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius and India. The latest Trinidad poll was supervised by Vishnu Bisram.
The poll finds Trinis are staying the course in the way they voted in the last general election of May 24 and are determined to change several of the local governments under the PNM control because of dissatisfaction in performance.
People express frustration over lack of service in their communities. Voters complain about poor drainage, roads and water supply and inaccessibility to their local rep.
Only two of 14 bodies are found to be safe for the PNM – Pt. Fortin where the PP has a chance in only two of eight seats and San Juan/Laventille where the PNM is leading in 9 seats and the PP in four seats. The PNM is struggling in its heartland of Diego Martin and in the capital city of Port of Spain both of which could end up as ties.
The UNC will sweep in the Indian areas of Princesstown, Couva, Penal, and Chaguanas.
Kamla is also winning Tunapuna, Sande Grande, Rio Claro, Arima, San Fernando, and Siparia.
So Kamla’s PP could win as many as 10 bodies and tie the PNM in two more.
In four of these bodies, the UNC will sweep the PNM giving them no representation and capturing 39 seats.
For the first time, the UNC will get representation in all 14 boros.
The PP can capture up to 95 seats. The most seats the PNM could win, about 45 with 40 more likely.
The PP went into the election with 42 seats and the PNM 82. Ten seats have been added for this election.
