The executive members of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners’ Association (GGDMA) on Monday last met with the residents of Mahdia to discuss with them, how the monies donated by the association through the relief fund can be best used to meet their needs.
The visiting team explained to residents that while they had established the fund to help residents in the mining community to rebuild in the wake of the recent fire, the decision as to how the fund is best utilised will be done in conjunction with the residents, the regional administration and the Government of Guyana officials.
President of the GGDMA, Fred McWilfred explained that the main aim of the meeting was to discuss how the assistance can be distributed based on the recommendations of the residents.
The association had responded immediately to the news of the devastating fire and help was mobilised, both in terms of cash and building materials.
The GGDMA had earlier made an initial allocation of over half $500,000 as an initial payout.
At the meeting a few of the residents pointed out that the initial assistance missed some persons. This was quickly rectified and all the eligible persons received the assistance.
The association also publicly commended the Government’s rapid response to the devastation and commended the move to allocate and regularise housing in the area.
The GGDMA during the interaction took time to update the residents on the status of the work of the special land use committee established by President, Bharrat Jagdeo.
McWilfred noted that the committee has completed its recommendations and Minister Robeson Benn has prepared a report.
This report is now being reviewed by members of the committee to ensure that it adequately reflects the discussions, he said.
Once the report is approved it will then be sent to President Jagdeo and his cabinet members for final discussion and a decision on how the sector will progress.
The GGDMA official explained that the report reflected the sentiments of all miners and they are confident that the recommendations will be taken seriously.
Miners were reminded that the GGDMA is there to represent all miners, “from the large scale operator to the
porkknockers and will continue to represent miners’ rights to ensure that mining remains economically viable for families.”
The GGDMA, on July 1, established the Mahdia Relief Fund with the specific purpose to assist miners and members of the mining community of Mahdia.
The mining community of Mahdia was ravaged by fire the day before.
That fire ravaged several businesses and the homes of several residents.
Mahdia is the central hub for the mining activities in region eight and many of the businesses affected provide vital support for miners.
