Cycling, dominos, fun day & take-away lunch carded for Malteenoes Ground
By Franklin Wilson
With the aim of increasing their ability to become self sufficient, the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) is embarking on a robust fundraising drive to rake in much needed funds to strengthen their ability in sending teams to compete for development and exposure, overseas.
GCF Vice President Brian Allen who is also Chairman of the Racing Committee yesterday at a Press Conference held at Ansa McAl Trading, 60 Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara to make details of Sunday’s activities known, informed that it will be a three-part fundraiser which will take place at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands.
Cycling, involving five-categories of riders will headline the event but a 15-team dominoes competition as well as a take away lunch and fun day will also take place.
Ansa McAl Trading Marketing Assistant Anjeta Hinds said that the Company is always aiming to broaden their horizons with sponsorship of events of this nature which helps to empower associations and other groups.
Hinds explained that the reason for choosing Smalta as the brand for the event was because it has a broad reach in terms of age and has lots of nutrients and vitamins. “Anything that is family oriented, anything that enhances sports in Guyana and puts Guyana in a positive light, Ansa McAl is always on board as you know. We can appreciate the outreach from the cycling federation through this effort and we will continue to give our support.”
Hinds also encouraged patrons to support the event which is a family event. Apart from receiving a cheque for $150,000, all the bar proceeds will also go to the Federation.
The cycling events will take place around the outer circuit of the National Park. Senior riders will battle for 10-laps and the first six to cross the finish line will receive cash prizes.
Junior cyclists will compete in a six-lap duel while the veterans and Mountain bike competitors will contest respective 5-lap races.
There will also be races for BMX riders in the 6-9, 10-12, 13-15 and open categories. Trophies and cash (open race) will be at stake in these events which will vary from 1-lap to 500meters.
The top 3 teams in the dominoes competition will receive attractive cash incentives along with trophies. Cycling will get underway at 11:00hrs while double six-time for dominoes will be 12:00hrs. The take away lunch will be served from 12:00hrs.
The GCF is aiming to send riders to a number of overseas engagements including the Caribbean Junior Championships set for August 7 and 8 as well as the Caribbean Elite Championships and the Commonwealth Games. The level of funds in the Federation’s coffers will determine the numbers travelling.
Meanwhile, the annual Bike-A-Fest also sponsored by Ansa McAl under their Smalta brand is set for August 14 at the National Park. More details will be released in the coming weeks.
