Dear Editor,
An impartial reading of reactions in the media to the clerical sex-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church shows that, consciously or unconsciously, the writers are applying double standards – a much stricter standard to the Catholic Church and a rather lenient standard (even to the point of ignoring that the problem exists) to civil society and to other Christian groups.
Catholics need to be aware of this common human tendency to favour those whom we like and condemn others whom we do not like.
There is no point in replying to people who have already made up their minds about who they like or do not like.
Often they themselves are not aware of their emotions and feelings when they pass judgment.
Prejudices are picked up from our varied backgrounds due to complex historical circumstances……It is like preferring one football team to another.
One vociferously condemns the referee’s decisions which favour a rival team, while glossing over the same decisions should they assist one’s favourite team. One cannot argue about such blind emotions. Reasoning will lead nowhere.
