…GWI launches probe
Amidst a morning downpour yesterday a sewer line ruptured at the corner of Carmichael and New Market Streets just outside the fence of State House, the official residence of the President.
When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday a filthy looking liquid with a pungent odour could be seen spewing from a depressed section of the road.
Ranks of the Guyana Police Force were also seen redirecting traffic away from the location.
The Guyana Water Incorporated, the nation’s supplier of water and sanitation services subsequently advised that a sewer line had broken.
The entity explained that the breakage occurred on a six-inch pressure line and caused damage to the road.
“The breakage resulted in no damage to property or injury…GWI teams are currently assessing all damage with the aim of effecting all repairs in the swiftest manner possible.”
According to GWI’s Sanitation Manager, Rensford Joseph, “a full investigation is required to determine the cause of the breakage; however GWI will be working along with all relevant authorities to ensure the area is sanitized and all repairs made to the damaged road”.
GWI officials later in the afternoon were observed placing a cordon around the damaged section of the road.
