It was a disaster waiting to happen. It nearly materialized in its worst possible form. There was the expected collapse but fortunately no one was hurt. Quite frankly, it was unnecessary.
This newspaper had highlighted close to two months ago that residents of James Street, Albouystown, had complained of rotting utility poles.
The Guyana Power & Light (GPL) recently placed a new pole at the location but inexplicably did not transfer the transformer and power lines immediately.
The result? Chaos ensued in the area yesterday, when three poles – including one with a transformer – broke at their bases and were left supported only by wires. The poles ended up several feet from a house. Several other poles tilted under the pressure created by the extended power lines.
“Dey say dey coming back to take the rest of the stuff off the post and put it on the new post, I tell them the only time they will come back is when it fall down and now watch.
They did not even plant the post deep enough…children running all over this place they coulda dead, the wires stretching, it will burst just now,” an irate resident said.
At the scene residents were awaiting the arrival of GPL officials to disconnect the live wires that were dangling dangerously, and to remove the rotting poles.
GPL recently announced that new poles would be placed next to older ones to strengthen them, or if necessary, the faulty poles would be replaced.
