Police on the West Coast of Berbice have tracked down and arrested the driver of a Honda CRV, who had struck a pedal cyclist and escaped, after briefly stopping to assess what had happened. After ensuring that nothing was wrong with his vehicle he quickly got back inside and sped away.
The accident occurred on Sunday about 19:00 hrs on the Cotton Tree Public Road. According to reports, the CRV was driven by an East Coast Demerara businessman.
Kaieteur News understands that the pedal cyclist, Flint Bacchus of Cotton Tree, was on his way home when the CRV’s driver who was travelling in the opposite direction, attempted to overtake more than one vehicle. In the process he struck Mahadeo, damaging his bicycle and crushing his right hand.
Mahadeo, who is a cane cutter at the Blairmont Estate, was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where he remains a patient in the male surgical ward.
Residents had observed the licence plate number of the vehicle when the driver had stopped and promptly gave it to the police, who eventually tracked down the owner. It turned out that the vehicle was sold to someone else, who was also contacted by the police. He claimed ownership of the CRV, but told investigators that he had lent it to his friend who is a businessman. He was arrested and taken into custody as the investigation continues.
