Berbice based fast bowling all-rounder Paul Wintz is one step closer to realizing his dream of representing his county.
The former Young Warriors Cricketer, who also campaigns in the Trinidad leagues, is one of two new faces selected on the Guyana Senior team to participate in the Caribbean 20/20 tournament which bowls off tomorrow in Barbados.
Wintz, who now plays for West Demerara side New Line Cavaliers in Demerara’s first division cricket, will join former Guyana youth player and fellow Berbician Jonathon Foo as the only uncapped players in the 14 man squad which hopes to win the Caribbean 20/20 tournament and qualify to represent the West Indies in The Club Champions League in South Africa.
The executives and members of the New Line Cavaliers extend congratulations to Paul Wintz on his deserving entry to the Guyana cricket squad to participate in this year’s regional 20/20 tournament.
“We are confident that Paul’s ability with bat and ball along with his fielding prowess would be an asset to the team. We wish him and the entire team all success and look forward to them bringing home the coveted title and to Guyana’s participation in the Champions league in South Africa in September” a NL Cavaliers official told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
The Guyana team was expected to depart this morning for Barbados where they face the Windward Islands in their opening match at the Kensington Oval on Friday. Guyana then face CCC at Kensington on Sunday before battling Barbados next week Thursday at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad in their final preliminary round game.
The semi-finals are fixed for July 30 and the Final on July 31. Guyana won the inaugural Regional 20/20 tournament when they beat Trinidad and Tobago in the 2006 final in Antigua and lost to Jamaica in the last regional 20/20 competition in 2008.
Trinidad and Tobago who lost to Australia’s New South Wales in the final of the last Champions League in India, are the defending Regional Champions.
