Dear Editor,
Mr. Ralph Ramkarran said at the recently concluded FITUG conference, “The first thing I would do is to consider the possibility of eliminating extreme poverty in Guyana within my first term.”
“It would mean that no child will go to bed saying ‘Mommy, I’m hungry”. He continues, “learning from past leaders like Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan”.
He cleverly omitted the present President Mr. Jagdeo who serves longer than both the Jagans.
It was Cheddi Jagan who said in 1992 that an elected PPP Government will ensure that when a housewife goes to the market she will have extra change to buy sweets for the children.
But today in 2010, eighteen years after Cheddi made that statement the children are crying out, “Mommy, I am hungry”.
Mr. Ramkarran admitted in his own words that children are still going hungry to bed and there is extreme poverty in Guyana after eighteen years of PPP government. What did Mr. Ramkarran as a senior member and strategist of the PPP party do to reduce this extreme poverty in the country?
Are the Guyanese people still stupid to be fooled with promises by power hungry politicians?
In addition, Ramkarran thinks that violence, both physical and sexual, towards children, is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Mr. Ramkarran should be aware that members of his own party and of the Cabinet are guilty of these same offences he is talking about.
This writer had to claim refugee status in Canada for a female child that was sexually molested by a leading politician.
Mr. Ramkarran, why were you silent when one of your Cabinet Ministers pistol whipped a youth and fired shots in a rum shop because one of his women was drinking with the youth?
As a lawyer and a Presidential hopeful, you were very silent when the DPP abused her office in the Pink Suitcase trial and in other cases laid malicious charges against known government opponents.
Is it fair and in the interest of justice that the President of Guyana can sue Kaieteur News, Adam Harris and Freddie Kissoon but these persons cannot sue the President? I am sure only a kangaroo court will allow a trial like this to proceed.
In any justice system, both parties in litigation must have equal opportunities to sue each other.
Mr. Ramkarran, why wait to be elected President of Guyana to solve these problems you mentioned, start your house cleaning right now in your own party if you want to convince Guyanese voters you are genuinely honest and interested in their welfare.
