Dear Editor,
Looks like I’ve just stirred up a hornet’s nest with my “Open letter to Robert Corbin”. Now I know what it’s like to be Freddie Kissoon under attack.
Let me make it emphatically clear to all: Harry Gill does not dance to the beat of any political party, neither do I drink the Kool Aid from any political leader. I am an independent thinking person who believes in honesty, fairness, justice, equality, the rule of law, and doing the right thing everyday the Good Lord puts life into my body.
I am a patriotic Guyanese who hates to see the lack of progress in my native land, and the sufferings of my people year after year.
Although the rambling letter written by Lurlene Nestor in KN of July 18: “When will we ever collectively lay blame where blame is due?” does not merit my time for a response, I wish to emphasize this point: This coming General Election is not about Harry Gill or Lurlene Nestor; it’s about the dismal state of affairs of this country and the sufferings of the Guyanese people.
It’s about creating good-paying jobs; restoring the economy; reducing the deficit; providing quality health care and education; it’s about getting rid of corruption and crime; and to do so, we must get rid of the toxic waste within the PPP/C Administration.
I am sure Lurlene Nestor has her reasons to be loyal to Mr. Corbin, and his contribution to the PNCR is deserving of the highest esteem. But to ignore the voting trend of our people in free and fair elections is not only naive, but simply dumb.
John Adams, an American president, once said, “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”
The truth is difficult to accept sometimes; but the PPP has never been accused of rigging an election during the last 18 years. So unless the PNCR can find a way to significantly increase its membership to exceed that of
the PPP, Mr Corbin will always remain Leader of the Opposition.
There is an increasing number of potential independent voters, and former supporters of the PPP/C who are disappointed with the Jagdeo Administration, and would willingly give their support to a unified opposition force contesting the General Elections in 2011. But the interest of the country far exceeds the ridged ideology of any political party or its leader. The PNCR needs someone at its helm who recognizes this, and would work diligently and in good faith to accomplish this collation.
Sadly I fear, Mr. Corbin is not that leader.
Harry Gill
